at what age?

I have a litter of puppies that is 5 1/2 wks old. One of the persons who committed to taking one wants to come by today and get it. I'm hesitant. Is it too early?

Most states require them to be 8 weeks old.

Since, they are weaned earlier, is the extra time for them to mature with their litter mates and in their first home?

A baby needs his mother for more than milk. I like 7 weeks.

Shadinc is correct the magic number is after 49 days or 7 weeks. I like yo keep mine until 9 weeks. I like to make sure they get good exposure to many things, and in ensure they are adequately socialized.

The person I got my dog from had the mother of the litter stolen when the pups were 4 weeks old. This was the 3rd breeding made and the person said there was a notable difference in how the pups acted from this litter to the previous 2 when the mother was there until the pups left.

I am a firm believer that pups learn from the mother and the littermates until the leave. I feel the faster the pup leaves, the less it learns.

Mine didn't have the "manners" that the pups from the first 2 litters had.

In my case the mother tries to avoid the puppies. They want to suckal but they now have tiny sharp teeth that seem to hurt her. How can they have time with her if they want to nurse but she's wants to avoid them. She will surrender to them for a whille and they suck her dry but won't stop. I just seperate the two.

Allow her a place to be able to get away from pups when she wants to and nurse as she wants to. Some build a small platform for the female to jump on. Also if you allow her to wean them gradually she will dry up and tighten up faster than just pulling pups off all at once. Pups will have a stronger immune system too.
I don't like pups to leave until they have had their first 2 shots usually 9-10wks old.

" They need more than milk" They're learning a valuable lesson.
