Start a hound

I imagine you'll get many different views but I will say this a once in a lifetime hound is just that and woods time is the most important thing as introducing it to what you want to hunt . you don't really train a hound either it has it or it don't all you can do is give it the opportunity to do what it was bred for. . Start it alone hunt it alone don't want a me too dog hunt it in thick coons start on bait piles if its a natural it'll show good luck .

There is no "best" way. Every pup is different. Load them up and take them to the woods, night after night after night.

Simulate repetitions like you're going to experience in the woods.

A great dog is born...a good handler will get the best out of the pup...and an inexperienced handler could possibly ruin that same pup...

I do not coon hunt but I will give a few thoughts on bringing out the best from a pup...

If it were me I would have 2 pups...the reason is that they will compete against each other...a good example

you can use small chunks of chicken or spam etc...

use their hunger to your advantage...give them a taste of the goodies two days in a row...on the third day before feeding scatter these in the yard and then turn them out and walk around the yard and clap your hands and hiss them on to hunt...do this every two or three days and you will see those pups casting and looking at a run...

trap a coon and have the pups bay it a while...never to long...stop at a good stopping point...turn the coon out and turn the pups out on the track...put the coon up in a cage in a tree with a rope to lower and raise to fire the pup...the pup just needs to know what you want...

the thing is to always read the pup and not over do any training...

take the pup straight from the kennel to the dog box...straight from the dog box to a good place with lots of coon...turn the pups out and let them hunt...

pups and dogs can sense your level of excitement and they will feed of that as well...

"What's the best way to start a pup to be competitive and win in the hunts ?? We all want a world champ but I'm just curious what all tricks of the trade and proven methods of starting a pup to excel and become one of those once in a lifetime hounds...."

Socialization !! !! !!! , Praise !! !! !!!!!!! and a dash of discipline !

While "It is NOT the NORM" to train Coon Hounds I do and also know Many Hounds men that also train as well with Amazing results !!

Allot of Coon hunters simply take their pup to the woods and cut them loose over and over until they become whatever they become.
Then we keep and Breed only the best to the best always keeping a close eye on the pups generation after generation by wide masses of fellow Coon Hunters that follow the same Bloodlines and communicate Nightly on their progress. All Breeders I know STRIVE to better their Bloodlines and have Many Training secretes...... While Also studying Pedigrees like Science !!

While nearly ALL breeds of dogs owned in the Pet Population are never used for their Bred Purposes,,,,,, Coon Hunters have Held TRUE in the Masses !!!!!!!! They Breed ONLY Their Best to Their Best because THEY have to Live with THEIR Results.

This has created something Special !!! Hidden in most coon hounds is Amazing Intelligence. Big Spike I stumbled upon it...... Being a Life long Dog Trainer , I was told AND Believed It Could Not Be DONE.. "Willy you can't train a Coon Hound like that" they Told Me.
BOY Was They WRONG !!!!!!!!!!
Ive trained 300 lbs. English Mastiff's to play Red Light Green Light with Toddlers, Rottweilers To KILL Man Yet Completely STOP upon another command,,, So many different Breeds so many different things, over the years but Never a Coon Hound?????

Then I tried and realized somebody lied........... Once I got through this pups thick Head ! Their was a brain more Like a sponge ,,,, what ever I showed Him to my surprise He Done !!! So I kept training until I found their was no end ... Coon hounds can Retain More training Commands Than any other Breed I have Trained.

I fully believe Coon Hunting to be Among the Highest Form of LONG Range Obedience, Not just a Dog Cut loose to find game Rather a Obedience Bond between Us and a Hound,,,, Mine know they can not get the Coon, They Stay treed for me, and Will Not Leave for another Man, proving this in my mind. I believe a Lack of training programs has essentially flipped our Coon Hound breeds. Lack of training methods Forces Better Breeding per say.

I live by the above breeding code established before me but I add a form of Communication between my Hound and I, so I may see more deeply into everything he has to Offer me. Training is Communication and Only with Training can we truly speak to one another. Hence if I train a Hound for someone that feeds and plays with it daily I will still know more about him and Him more about me because we have talked to each other more thoroughly.

Big Spike
Socialize-- If you want a Top Competition Dog the first rule for me is they have to get along with the competition... So I Socialize pups greatly as a pup through adulthood to eliminate all forms of Aggression that could arise as this is an Adrenaline Fulled Sport for our Hounds!! And They are going to meet all Kinds of Strangers in the Comps!!!

Praise---( Positive Reinforcement ) Every Dog Does Best What He Loves To Do MOST PERIOD.
Praise is Key to Marrying what you want him to do with WHAT HE DOES. Praise is essential to achieve perfection!!!!

Discipline, ( Negative Reinforcement ) While Needed you can not discipline a dog to Perfection..... Discipline is Needed and takes up 20% of my training practices adjusted to each individual dog.
I use 20% negative reinforcement and 80% positive reinforcement (adjusted to dog) Within each and every training session always ending with the dog doing what I want and Praising him greatly for it.

With this recipe I find Coon Hounds as a whole to be the Most Intelligent K9's On Earth. Big Spike You CAN improve All of your hounds hunting abilities through training, winding , accuracy just like we both thought when we got our hounds.
While I believe and train much differently than the norm.
Walk With Wick has much Valuable information that has help me greatly add to my methods But most of all Believe in you If you think you can YOU CAN and your hound can do it better than a lab !

Im going to send you a Video, watch it then PM me your phone # and We Will Get Started on Your LEGEND !!!!

Loved your ? I Teach / Train over the phone and will Start your pup with you at your convenience with emailed video for Free all I ask for is an Honest reference of Honest your Opinion !!

And remember the Best Coon Hound in the World only does 3 things BUT He does it More CONSISTENTLY Than All Others !!! He finds It, He Tells You Its There and He STAYS !!!! I work toward those things first and in that order.

WildWilly...How well do your ideas and methods transfer over to curs that a feller might be trying to start on squirrels as well as coons? That is my current thing to deal with.
