There have been 10 or 12 cases this year in Pitt County, NC that included fox and raccoons. My dogs are up-to-date on shots.

We are lucky I don't think we have ever had a coon with a confirmed case here. Mostly skunks.

We typically have one case a year here, but that hasn't happened yet. Usually that one is a woodchuck for some reason, but sometimes a coon. About a month ago we had a sick raccoon show up on the farm and the same day one dog locked up and died and another seized up but lived. The dead coon and dog were tested, but it was not rabies.
I always thought or have heard that areas that have a rabies problem {such as down south} always have it around.

Had 2 confirmed cases in Paris TWP, Ohio. Eastern Stark county this year. They trapped hundreds of coon to test and then they put out the oral rabies vaccine last week.

Yes sir, the state tested the dog that died and the raccoon. They said it was negative for rabies on both animals. The vet said that he believed the dog that lived {and has made a full recovery} had Ivermectin poisoning. There's no way to prove it, but the dog runs loose on our horse farm and the vet said if he ate some horse poop immediately after someone wormed a horse that would do it. Seems like to me the wormer would be pretty dissipated by then, but no.
The vet also said that they were recently seeing several cases of Ivermectin poisoning in dogs. Several people asked if the dog could have just gotten into or found a tube of it, but the way my dogs react to just seeing any white plastic thing in my hand that looks like it there is no way. My dogs hate it, I don't believe any dog would eat Ivermectin for recreation.

Pennsylvania and New York has been a hot bed for rabies in raccoon in the past. See if I can dig up some numbers.

Update: largest numbers were reported in Northeast US and Ontario. Ontario had over 250 cases reported in Racoon last year.
Here is some info on helping to spot a rabid racoon.

Doc, I have seen all of those signs with distemper also. Except for the foaming at the mouth.

Pretty sure I killed 1 here last summer. Seen it trying to climb an empty dog kennel. Had very slow and shaky motor skills. It wondered up into the woods and when I found it, it looked like a drunk trying to climb a tree. Managed to get to a low limb and when it seen me circling around it never took its eyes off me and growled loud and constant.

Should've probably reported it to have it tested, but I figured it wouldn't change anything. It either had it or it didn't. Buried in a hole in the woods took care of it.

Yesterday on FB, the Huntingdon Co Humane Society posted a rabid raccoon was killed in Huntingdon Co, Jackson Twp PA on May 26th and on May 31, a fox chased a cat on to a porch in Centre Co, State College Twp PA and it was found to have rabies.
