How does rain effect a track?

I decided to go hunting late last night when the Tornado watches and warnings were done. I cut the dog loose right at 1AM. He treed within about 30 seconds. Had a coon so I sent him again. The skies opened up and rained enough to get good and wet for about 5 minutes. Dog struck again and the skies really opened up. I was getting soaked. Dog seemed to bog down on the track. Doing lots of little circles and not moving it very fast. This is odd for him as he is normally a very fast track dog. Took him a bit to move at he finally rolled it over and treed. I thought for sure it was going to be slick. He just messed with it for too long. It was pouring at this time. I walked to him and sure enough he had a coon. I could only see it from a distance. When I got to the base of the tree and looked up, the rain was smacking me in the face so much I couldnt see. So my question is, how does rain effect a track?

.

I have seen a lot of coon treed in the rain. I have also seen rain wash away the tracks. Your dog done good and the most important thing is your dog gained the experience of hunting in the rain. When you plan on going to a night hunt you never know what the weather will be. Hunting in the rain gives your dog use to it.

Thanks for the response Bruce. I have hunted in drizzling, or just a casual rain before and didnt feel it affected the dog. I have never hunted in a downpour like that before.

Rain

Most of the time rain creates great tracking conditions. The exception would be the very hard wipe-out rain that can wash out tracks.

In a light to medium rain, I can sometimes smell a coon (if it's close).
