16 plus hours down under.

was woods time sunday night with perfect conditions to put some coons up. had some stuff going on family and work wise so could only hunt a couple hours or couple drops. no big deal, dogs been working fairly well and been good hunting and with great weather should of been a cake walk....

hit the road on 4 wheeler with minn, sky, and spayed dog on rig rack. was aways from hunting spot and minner rigged nice, couldnt believe sky never did. cut loose and no barking and two young dogs emptied out while minn was hunting but no barking. sky got done with business and couple hundred in struck and started burning track then treeing quick on fallen hollow log with coon good 30ft inside.

the way i hunt usually dont cast from last tree unless single hunting. like to drive and reset dogs brain and set up hunt in direction i like so able to play field general when multiple dogs are out. this time decided to call dogs off log and cast east towards direction i wanted to hunt from get go. heard sky strike just in hearing and start burning track, other two dogs came over and hit and was screaming crazy fast then nothing. couldnt hear anything and garmin gave the good ole ??? mark.

dogs went underground and hole was way up top of creek bank going back towards creek. messed around forever and couldnt hear anything but could feel vibrations putting ear to ground from barks in ground little way off creek. ended up making several trips home getting digging equipment and started digging in from creek side. tree roots were main obstacle and broke couple shovels. at some point dug in right spot where could here barking and coon fighting back. listened for along time until dogs won battle and no more barks. sat there all night and would try to dig in different places from time to time knowing was losing battle but kept hoping dogs would back out eventually. was getting cold but fell asleep and spayed dog woke me up and she was happy camper being out.

happy to see her but thought thats about right, my most worthless dog comes out just fine. i knew she wasnt as deep as other two that in heat of battle barked until dispatched the varmit that got us in this mess. about 4am got my hunting vest had hung on tree and seen mama was worried knowing i dont hunt this late unless saying something. headed home told family whats up, made couple runs feeding cattle and got on the horn for a back hoe to come save the day. got a buddy lined up with hoe and called landowner getting ok to do some digging. they were sick to hear dogs underground and said do whatever it takes.

was interesting getting machine in there and did a bunch of digs until finally hit the right spot. dogs were stuck and couldnt back out where tree roots were bad and tunnel had big drop straight down before there. guy running machine was amazing and digging sideways into tunnel little by little only opened it up size of baseball and sky popped head out. dogs were shell shocked for maybe a minute then when out of trench each tried casting out like let out of dogbox for first time of any random night. i had to call em back. unreal creatures a coon dog with burning desire to hunt is... over 16 hours underground and so stupid smart when hit daylight wanted to go hunting. LOL. i know holes aint good but had dogs in hundreds over years with lots of action usually coming home without much damage or extra work unlike this deal but i like unpredictable hunting scenarios and on this night got what the doctor ordered. LOL.

where i started digging and could hear dogs.

got serious with more than shovel...

HOLES (NOT)

Oh he knows how I feel about them holes, If my dog sticks his head in a hole , I'm burning it off!!! Nothing good to come from HOLES. There's too many Coons that want to go up trees, at least where I hunt. Now, with that said I understand that Matt likes his dogs to finish what they start, regardless of the place of refuge. My words to Matt are............. You're still young! you'll get over that line of thinking!!!! Haha . At any rate, I'm glad you got your dogs back in one piece, I don't know what I would do if I couldn't get on here and see a dog treed then a picture of a coon in a tree!

bad deal that turned out great. guy that saved day has dug anything and everything, seen it all he thought till this. LOL. hes a bird dog guy and always enjoyed my hounds and other friends, loves working dogs. we came up with strategy that worked well. he's good with dowsing rods and found the main tunnel along with few others. dug in from creek side where i had started with shovel until tree roots made impossible. got in there and sky barked and wined and could hit dogs with tape measure. he messed around until certain they backed up far as possible before drop off in tunnel they couldnt back anymore. took that measurement up top to where he witched the tunnel and dug right beside then slowly took bites until hole size of softball appeared. seconds later a little retarded black head popped out. worked perfect. i was prepared to write a thousand dollar check or more no questions asked. he wouldnt take a dime and i was floored. i said anytime morning, noon, or midnight need some mechanic work done call and dont care if christmas eve at 2am and its snowing!!! pays to be good to people and have friends in high places, never know when gonna need help.

your a 100% right dave, aint going to argue. i love dogs doing anything and everything possible to finish what start no matter consequences and that thinking will bite you where sun dont shine sooner or later. one thing though, when the boys come over once a week for beers and bsing i dont have to worry about talking about work, mowing the lawn, or any other thing normal adults talk about. always got a good hunting story and only problem is i wish most of em werent true!

Not a nice feeling with dogs under ground. Had a foxhound follow a yote into a 12" concrete field drain. They entered it in a blow out and followed the drain 300 yards to another area it had been eroding out wider but no to the surface and the yote turned around on the dog so they were face to face.

Started with a shovel and then got an excavator was 8 hours before dog was out.
