Keeping an old hound going

I have an old female that I haven't had long. I got her to train my puppy with and she's hard to keep weight on. I have some DogForte on order but I'm waiting for it to come in... anyone have any really good supplements to keep weight on and keep old dogs in the woods and Happy?

.

If your serious about wanting to get her bred I would invest some money. Fist with the vet for a complete profile. Probably 2 to 3 hundred depending on where you are at. Then address any health issues. Then I would put her on a 24/20 or better dog food. Breeding her you need her to produce milk. Then move into the supplements if you have to. I wouldn't look to them first thinking they are the answer.

Unfortunately, I like to hunt my hounds more than breed them so the good ones don't get bred till they have some age on them for the most part. I had one I bred twice in the 8 and 9 year range and she did well with pups. One in the 7 year range that did well also. I did breed one in the 3 year range and she had twice as many pups.

I haven't considered breeding her yet. She's got good bloodlines, but I figured she would be past the age to get pups off of. I might would, if it was possible though

Good quality dog food with a higher fat/protein ratio. If she is hard keeping weight on my first step would be to worn her with drontal plus which would clear out any tape worms that other wormers would miss. I supplement Mafia's diet with scraps some now that he is older, so he eats what we eat meat, vegetables, pasta ect. I've used dog forte but he does just as well on what I listed above. Being 10 his teeth are quite worn so I usually mix a few scraps in with his food and a little water and let it soak to get to softer. I often add a little coconut oil or tuna. Hope this helps.
