Breed for looks or ability

I've got a super nice grand nite female bluetick that is white as snow but will tree them coons like crazy and has proven so with some of the country's best !!! But have been told by some bluetick men She should have been culled as a youngster man when will thes guys start breeding for ability and for bettering the bluetick as a coondog and not be so **** jealous just because it ain't out of so and so blood lines breed coondogs to coondogs and try to get something better than what u got !!!

Breed for looks or ability

Harry, If you guys ever get tired of feeding ole Snow let me and Deric know. I have an empty kennel for her anytime. Looks do not matter to me, My eyes are so bad now that I can't tell what they look like in the dark. Hoss and Snow cross equals were gonna find out.

I sure am glad she wasn't culled. Just as glad that diamond Jim wasn't culled for being to light in color, or hustler wasn't culled for being the pup no one wanted! Good thing the Lee bros didn't cull for color, a great looking hound is nice but I'm more concerned with 2 looking down.

That Harry guy has always been rough on a feller that hunts a blue dog

Deric & Sandy, those danged pups out of that old cull white gyp may never tree a coon, but I heard from Mike Fleek on Monday night after he got back home from hunting & he said his male pup was running the fire out of a rabbit! Trashy ole blue haired pup !!

Vic, I have noticed how much more Harry smiles when he is posing with a Blue Dog winner than he does with another breed. Tree Curly Bill

Female

I bought a left over female pup back in 87 at the World Hunt when it was held in Logansport IN. Keith Mills of OK had a litter there out of Gr. Nt. Ch. Cainy (spelling?) Creek Trump and Cainy Creek Squeak. They showed Diamond Jim top and bottom. The female I bought was left over and I got a special deal on her because no one else picked her. She wasn't the best looking little gal and was pretty much white with a few ticks thrown in. Long story short, she was treeing her own coon at 8 months old and went on to make a very nice hound. She had a huge mouth, and a heart just as big and was a sweet heart at all times. Never had a mean hair on her. She would pull you into the woods at dark and pull just as hard coming out at daylight. I'd like to have another like her so no, light colored blueticks doesn't bother me a bit.

I have one that pretty white as well but she is the coldest nosed dog that I have ever hunted. I breed for ability but also confirmation, if they are not put together right, they can't hold up when hunting lions in rugged country.
Color doesn't bother me at all.
Adios,
Gary

I dont get it

Some of the best blue dogs I've been to the timber With have been black and whitr, I don't get why the general make up of bluetick people has such an issue with it, besides show me one that throws black and white pups like it's srlf , rarely happens most black and white blues throw ticked up med to dark pups, so in my opinion, its in pigmentation as much as Gene's, we need yo be worried about ability rather or not a pup is black and white or not, So the next time the question comes up on the board about Why can't a blue dog win the world hunt, just remember the majority is more concerned about how dark they are rather than their ability, pups are born black and white so that gives them right to be black and white, as far that X breed crap, I will never register one x breed black and white or not, to me black and white are blueticks, their color doesn't make them an so called x breed, stupidest thing ever come up with, breed for ability, we need giude lines sure, but if a pup is born black and white, then in my opinion it has the right to be just that, .......Gerald

Breed for what you like and don't worry about it. Everybody has an opinion but it's just that, an opinion. if your the one feeding it why would you care what others think.

Until the Bluetick becomes considered a major competitor in the high stakes elimination style and $$ style hunts, instead of a extreme rarity (what are there like 5 entered in the PKC world hunt?) We have much more important things to worry about. Only if and when this happens am I willing to enter into any kind of dialog about what is the "preferred" look of a Bluetick.

Ding Ding Ding!!! We have a winner! Very well said Mike!

I don't have a clue about where to begin to change that extreme rarity you speak of into regularity. I guess the fat bald guy in the mirror (ME) is as good a place as any to start I hope to see more Blue dogs entered up in the major elimination style hunts. I have never understood why more don't get entered ..... Wesley's post from 3 years ago may be the most accurate assessment yet. Whether it is acknowledged or dismissed as a dead horse is another can of worms

Don't make a difference in the least bit. Had a great female, GRNTCH Rolin Blue Lady, that was like that. She made it to UKC top 100 & raised a top son, GRNTCH Rolin Blue Tuff Stuff, out of GRNTCH Runnin Bullet. Had very few light pups in 2 litters we raised from her & several made good coondogs. Take care, Ron.

I think the people that are real with whats out there know why more dont get entered. Most blueticks lack an edge or what it takes to excel in these type of hunts and most bluetickers dont have enough desire to win when there is much more at stake. You have to have enough confidence in your dog and some pretty deep pockets to hunt. If their were more blueticks capable of winning then I think we would see a few more entered. I know of more than a handful of guys that would be taking blue and trying their luck in these $ style hunts but they all are still looking for the right dog to take.....and have been looking the last 20 plus years.

Im not sure if I care enough about the hunts to put in the time and money but I do know Im included in that group that is looking for that something more.

In Regards to the original post, Color is just an opinion an we all got one but the guys that overlook ability because of it could be part of the problem as far as getting better hunters. I like a dark blue dog with tan trim but very rarely do I get one that has the talent and the looks that I like. Latley I have been hunting the light colored, long haired, short eared kind and when they get in there a do a nice job on a coon you can bet on the walk back to the truck I say to myself man she looked good. The better they perform in the woods the prettier they are to me.

I raised and trained Trump, Austin Cox and I had a littermate to your female named Cloudy that was black and white. Cloudy won queen of the BBOA national hunt. No one wanted a pup out of her or any part of Cloudy, all they could see was a open spotted black and white dog.
Cloudy was a coondog and had a million dollar mouth.
