First look at empty tree.

Last night my old female did a nice job working a track and getting treed, one of those you really enjoy listening to. Track lasted about 15 minutes, started out kinda cold, she worked it up giving long bawls, that got closer and closer together with more excitement as the track warmed up. She hit the tree with 2 big bawls and broke over into a chop, then right into a ringing chop, telling me she had no doubt that he was up there.
I drove a couple hundred yards, then walked another couple hundred, nice big tree without a leaf on it, easy to shine. I thought this won't take long to find, wrong.
I start shining and at first I thought, wow this looks empty. I walked a full circle around that tree, nothing. There was one spot that kinda appeared to be a hollow limb up high, it was a broke out place, that could go down, but it wasn't easy to tell. I thought well that might bail us out in a hunt, but I was thinking she missed.
Just me and the dog, no reason to be in a hurry, she's telling me he's there. I thought I'm going to walk around this thing again and look at every limb. I soon noticed a fork that was a little heavy, I thought well maybe, so I walked around to the other side, plain as day now, there was the coon. I pet her up good and headed for the truck.
This has happened before and I've been too quick to decide if a tree was empty or not, scolded a dog and sent them on, then get out there a hundred yards and look back and see eyes, gives you a sick feeling in your gut too say the least.....
Look those trees over good, then look at them again, can turn a bad hunt into a good hunt,

Hey Dean,
I used to have that happen to me but I just figured my old dog was so fast she out ran the coon to the tree!

I can sure relate to this post. I've had this happen so many times, especially when the leaves are off. Once I do find the coon, it sticks out like a sore thumb and I wonder how I didn't see it from the beginning. Maybe we're getting old? Lol

Lol!

I got some friends of mine that thought their hounds were just missing a good bit. First night I went with the both of em we found coons in every tree and I think I found em all but one maybe. One who has been hunting with me since he was 11 and is now a grow man was like this is sad. I said what ya mean? He said well we got you out here with a broke neck and can barely look up the tree and here you are finding all the coons and here we ain't got a thing wrong with us and we can't hardly see em even after you find em. Lol! The other night we made a quick drop and this time their hounds did miss but the owner of one of the hounds was telling me how when the wind was blowing his would tree a tree or two over down wind from where the coon was. Sure enough up wind from the tree there sat the coons. I don't always find one in the trees we make and down here some are so messy or go so many places I don't look long with the shape I am in but if it's a good tree and open I don't mind taking time to really give em a good look. Especially if I am going to line one out for missing one. Did that the wrong way to many times when I was younger and have become very cautious on it with time. I use to even climb up to the hollow trees real regular or smoke em to make sure they were there. A lot of work though. Can't risk doing that anymore though the way my neck is. Need to find me another young kid who was as crazy about coonhunting as I was as a kid I guess. Let him do the climbing for me. :-)

You don't need a young kid. Just do like Wendall Bond and carry a chain saw.

Lol!

Guess that would work! Only trouble is since most of the land I hunt is public got a feeling it wouldn't take to long and I would be in jail using the Where the Red Fearn Grows approach. :-)

Ruby treed one night on a smaller tree with no leaves on it. Chuck couldn't find a coon in it. He scolded Ruby and told her to go find a coon. But she wouldn't leave so he put a leash on her and led her away. After, she quit barking, I shined the tree and the coon was sitting in the fork of it watching them walk away. There was a hole there, it had hidden in.

Happens a lot to me as well. I will also say that if you go get yourself a foxpro caller, you will hardly ever question some of these holes a coon could go into again. They come out of places you wouldnt think possible. An old bird dog buddy of mine always said, "The nose knows". Trust the dog unless they are an habitual liar. Lol
