There are tons a different methods and everyone has there personal preferences on different things, such as bedding, feed, meds, location and etc. And all dogs are different. I personally, feed my 2 hounds Purina dog chow and they seem to love it. Just built them both off the ground kennels with cedar chips in their boxes and heated pads (they are spoiled) but its all in hoping to improve the goo filled eyes and skin allergies etc. Im currently dealing with the eye issue on both, one has what i think is a hot spot on his back leg near foot, and the youngest has a scabbed over deal on his back hip. For those of you that have multiple hounds, what kinds of things do you prefer. And i dont mean just feed i mean meds for heart worms, tape, ring, eyes, hot spots, fleas, ticks etc .Do you give them certain things each month, every so many months? Basically what I am asking is what is your set up. The whole 9 yards to keep your hounds healthy.
first, I would get rid of the cedar chips. it has been known to cause skin issues due to the oils. I personally will not feed dog chow due to a dog breaking out w/ hotspot after eating it and that was the ONLY thing changed in his life. I use pine chips in warm weather and hay in cold weather, not straw because it can hold water/heat inside the hollow stems creating bacteria and thus causing issue w/ dog. I use comfortis for fleas (order from Australia). I use ivermectin alternating w/ goat wormer for general worming. if no fleas, usually no tapes. I was/am feeding Purina Pro Plan savor, am currently switching over to ValuPak Free 22/12 & 28/20 depending on the dog. too soon to see if it helps or not....at least helps the wallet. there are lot of human meds that dogs can take, just be aware of the dosage. my 70# can take 50mg tramadol 3x day w/o issue. I also use benedryl 25mg 1-2 tabs 1-2x daily for itching, sneezing, allergies. I have one that is strictly on grain free due to allergies, her mom had them too. if you can afford it, esp for the ones that have the itchy issues, get them allergy blood tested. may not show anything, but it may. had one that was allergic to peanuts and I was giving PB treats. no more for anyone! lots of times you can adjust the feed to rule out allergies with food but it can be costly and time consuming. sorry its so long but that's what I do.
