.

The SD card slot is for extra mapping such as Birdseye, etc
The 430 comes preloaded with 100K topo of the US and that is all the mapping many use and are happy with.

When the 430 is purchased it comes with a free years subscription for birdseye. Since you purchased yours used I am not sure if he activated it or not.

Say you purchased it new and here is how I feel you should proceed. Register it on gamins website first.

Download the basecamp program from gamins website and the plug your astro in and interface with that program to download basecamp. That is where the card slot comes in.
I prefer a smaller card but get a 8, 16 or 32 GB high speed card and place in the card slot and when you download birdseye to your basecamp program the send it to the sd card.
Make sure you send it to the card and not the handheld.

If you are limited by your computer or computer skills then Garmin has State by State Birdseye available for most states.
Those are $79.99 and you just instal the card.
