I'm curious as to if telemetry tracking is a way of the past. I have a alpha system but due to extreme mountain ranges I only get a mile and a half at absolute most. Curious to learn more about "beep" tracking. Thanks in advanced

i thought the same thing until i went yote hunting with a buddy that has a roof antenna on his truck i hooked my 220 up and picked up dogs at over 5 miles away what a difference

I wouldn't have thought they extended it that far, at 60 bucks I'll pick one up for the hell of it but I'm still interested in learning more about the beep system because most of the time there are no roads and beating bush is the only way to bring the hounds home.

Bombard what type of hunting are you doing. I can say nothing bad at all about the telemetry systems and I am sure there are people in areas like yourself that use them on your dogs. I think Quick Track is a good system along with Wild Life. There are several different styles of collars and the main difference is some you can change the battery in and some are factory sealed. They last a long time.
Two downsides in my opinion is in the mountains you can get a bounce from the signal and you have to learn how to use your dials to tweak it down or up to get a good readings.

I am a Garmin fan but I understand your circumstance. Over the years most people get confident in their Garmin and that is all they use and I really think it works better without a tracking collar hanging there beside it.

As far as antennas they have a hand held long range antenna that probably could average you 3 miles. Now in mountains that changes fast depending if you or the dogs are on top or both at a bottom of different mountains. If your heading into the back county you could eve beef up to a YAGI antenna that could get further. They are heavier but you can get a carrying case for your shoulder. I am sure others with your same circumstance will chime in and I am interested in reading about some of their experience in the mountains.

Bruce I hunt in the heart of the adirondacks we hunt hare and Coon not very uncommon to end up crossing multiple ranges in a single drop. I was thinking of running a beep system to piggy back my alpha system in case of say a malfunction with my Garmin. The thing up here is if your dog don't come home with you, you'd be lucky to pick him up the next day. Now I understand about the yogi antenna but are u reference in that to the telemetry or are you saying I could rig the antenna to connect with my alpha? I appreciate the input

Just before I went to AR to hunt in the W/R refuge I tried my roof top antenna and picked my collars up 5.7 miles not line of sight but by the actual distance I drove.
I still have my Wild Life beep beep and keep it charged WHY don't know but I do. Bruce did I read your statement where I think you said that antenna,the fold out YAGI , can be hooked up to my Alpha just as the roof top ?

Yes but it has to be a Yagi that is designed for the Garmin Frequency. I personally wouldn't even think of toting one of those heavy things around as the one for the garmin frequency is larger than what your use to using for the beep beeps. But it is an option.

Some guys put the receiver on the same collar as the Garmin. They just keep the old beep beep in the truck and if they ever lose communication they can still find em. Thought about this myself. Those collars stay up forever and in a bad situation you can still find your dog.

Ive always used wildlife and marshall ,
We just tried the alpha a couple of days this week and theres no way id trust them ,when south of the collars it always said they were to the west,when north of the collars it wasnt as far off ,it always showed the dogs were running a couple hundred yards out then one treed and one on point,but the collars were never on a dog ,just sitting on a stump ten foot from me ,we drove around a few miles to see what would happen ,same thing ,always to west on south side and one collar constantly lost signal from less then a mile on,the other collar had signal to 7 miles
I like the marshall lighted collars with the sportdog 3225 ,but the wm get a little more range where we hunt,we are going to order a falconry transmitter and see what kind of range we get with it

we lost a dog the other night that was only 200 yards away we had signal from the colar but no gps she was in a deep holler treed on a big oak the holler was v shopped 200 yards straight down on both sides we could not even hear her we searched for 5 hours then I said she has to be down there in a hole , wrong about 100 yards down I could hear her its funny how the sound can get stuck in something like that , I did not get gps signal back until we were out of that holler with her

when we first started using GPS a lost signal was not uncommon, but then we added the yagi and could get 5-6 miles. The yagi was added long before development of newer antennas - this added immensely to the range, but did not address the reliability or run time of collars. So at that point we started using telemetry collars. I added a small changeable battery telemetry collar on our shocking system. Since that day I've never been concerned about reliability. When casting dogs, I place a DC40 GPS collar along with my telemetry collar attached to my G3 shocking collar. I remove my name plate collar to reduce the number of collars, my rationale is if I can't find a dog with two tracking systems - they probably don't need to be found. To address the issue of birds eye, I use a app, "where am I at" this will show your exact location and terrain that surrounds you. To this day i still use a 220 and DC40 collars and they still work great.
