I have a Tree Grippin Joe semen pup (Kansas Dancer bred) on top side and Mini Mouse bred on bottom side want be 5 months old until Saturday November 12th.
She goes with Insane Sam and will be at every tree I have put 5 coons out on her the last 3 hunts and she took a bite out of the first coon she every saw and every one since.

I did one hang up and she barked every breath no more hang ups causes tree jacking and tree running sight treeing never good for a pup imo.

Last night she barked up her first tree I never hunted a pup this young before and had plans to start her in the spring but was just going to learn her the fundamentals this fall but she seems to be ready to start right now can't make my mind up to put her up until spring or just take her every time with Insane Sam only problem that may cause her to be a me too dog and not be very independent.
What would you do??

Hunt it .....if it's exceptional u will know, if not u will b turning her loose again with the other dog !
Currrntly I'm hunting a 7 mth old off Havoc x Blackbean with other dogs been going since it was 5 mths old.

I would hunt her as well, BUT I would limit her to NOT more than 3 hours per night and NOT more than 3 night per week.

I would hunt her alone and see how she reacts !!, I always start mine at 4-5 ,months old alone at night and let them tell me when they are ready!! The only caution I would warn you about I'm not sure how coyotes are down your way they will call a young pup rite into them !, I have seen it ! So would hate her to get ate up or worse from some Coyotes if you have them ??

I do not know much but between reading Walk With Wick and hearing about all these Jam up young dogs but not much about them later down the road, I would suggest that you not hunt it until it matures, and you can get the obedience and trash breaking done that way it is already taken care of and you can hunt the hair off of her.

Hunt the pup and don't worry about the trash if it even developed a problem not hard to fix. Hunt the pup and feed it a few coon the obedience will come.

I like early starters because I don't want to invest a year in to a pup to find out its not going to hunt the way you want.
That dosnt meen that early starters are going to
Be super stars but it sure saves some time.
I have bred litters that you could do a drag with a coon hide at 10 weeks old and have a pup trail And tree it and by 6 months that pup will
Tree a wild coon by its self .
My advise would be hunt that pup by its self.

Hunt her. Once she tree's with the old dog and knows why she is treeing its time to hunt her alone. Only take her with another dog every now and again. This gives you a better chance of not making a me too dog. Pick and choose your nites in the winter. Full moon and temps dropping in the single degrees is setting her up for trouble. I try to avoid setting a pup up to fail there 1st season when they are that young.

I have one of her sisters that has been treeing by sent sence she was 3 months old nice litter of pups two in Utha guy sent me a message the other day said he hunted his with his old dog and all together they covered nine miles and the two pups were with them all the way and opened on track and treed some first time out.

hunting a pup with an old dog does not teach it to run track or to tree.
it only exposes the pup to coon to make it want coon.
I don't start pups till they are 8 to 10 months old. so i don't know on a 5 month old.
with mine as soon as they start trying to track coon I hunt them alone.
from what I have seen,, if you wait till its treeing good with the old dog you have already hunted it too long with another dog and it will cause you more work to get it to even go hunting alone. after its running track and treeing with the other dog,, when you single it out you will be back at step one again. it has to learn how to pick up loses and locate the right tree on its own without the other dog there to pick up the loses and locate the right tree for it.
when I hear someone talking about a slam up 5 or 6 month old pup I have to think to myself, wonder how good a dog it would have made if they had not started it so young and waited till it was older and ready.

Hunting a pup with an old dog teaches the pup that coon scent is what the pup needs to be looking for. It teaches the pup to work the track the right way and shows the pup that coon go up trees and that they should stay put and tree. Showing a pup a cage coon would be just exposing a pup to a coon. Not sure where your coming from here???

As far as a pup not leaving you feet after being hunted with an old dog. That's why you should have a pup in the woods for day walks at as early of an age you can. Mine are in the woods at 5 or 6 weeks old 4 to 5 days a week. If you lay the ground work you should have no problem getting a nice, hard hunting independent coondog. Despite what others say in 16 yrs of training pups this way I have yet to have one "burn out".

Each pup is different . If a pup is real bold and shows excitement and interest at a young age work it accordingly . I have had pups that showed little to no interest in a cage coon until eight or nine months , and have had others show alot of interest at four months old . There is no set age limit to work a pup on coon depends on pup . If they seem to be a little unsure of a coon at say four months wait another month and try again , don't push them . J.M.O

Thanks ever one for all your advice I have spent at lest 1/3 of my 50 years of coon hunting alone in the woods but now have a wonderful daughter that hunts as much as possible with me so Miss Priss will get her share of being hunted alone if my health holds up.

I love the great tips so many of you great hunters have experienced as they say you never get to old to learn a few new tricks all advice welcome.

A special thanks to Olie Smith for putting this pup in my home I have high hopes for her come spring as one guy said cold moon light winter nights no time to train a pup.
