I want to breed to a dog that catches a lot of coon on ground ,puts em up tell phone polls. Some thing that really runs to catch not run to tree. Anything out there like that?

Contact Jessie Lively down in LA. His Tiny dog has passed away but I think he still has the Frank dog that catches coons regularly and he doesn't do it cur dog style either!

Memories & 15 straws of semen is what I have left of a hound that caught many that decided to die instead of climb. Milo fields were the easiest for him to catch coon in. Corn was a little tougher. Waist high beans was real tough. Guys that hunted with him much saw it happen. Seen him catch two per night now and then after running hard in the crops for an hour or more. The hard running coon races have slacked off a bunch since he died. He opened steady on hard runners but got tight on looses until getting it lined out, which didn't take long. I really doubt if I ever have anouther like him.

To be honest, guys in hunts don't want this type of hound. You'll get less points for catching Coon on ground instead of treeing it. And guys want the automatic strike dog. So he won't shut up to be able to do this. Most of the dogs I have ever seen be able to do this in the hardwoods were Simi silent once they got the track going.

I understand that competition hunters don't want this but. A lot of us are not competition hunters 1st. We are just coonhunters first. Why is no one breeding for run to catch?

Check out Brookshire's Finley River Sting. Mr Brookshire has the highest expections of a track dog than anyone I know of. The year he put Sting in the world hunt he lost a cast (forgot in which round) because he caught 2 coon on the ground. I think peoples desire for an outstanding track dog all depends on where they hunt. Down here its a necessity.

The only way a top track dog does not catch a coon on the ground is if they slow down when they get close to the coon because they don't want to fight with it. Then they probably don't have the desire or drive that top dogs have to have. Or the terrain benefits the coon, etc. 5 foot soyabeans, cutover timber, bulldozer plies.
A top trackdog makes you walk further because they finish a very high percentage of their tracks. When they strike a coon it is not a question of if they will tree it, it is only a matter of where. That my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

The walker dog I know is Down River Duke. I know I am probably sounding like a broken record, but I have seen this dog tree coons in a pouring down rain that my dog couldn't even smell. I have seen him catch coon on the ground in cut over timber, and he is a full open track dog.

I own no part of him, but he is one of the best I have seen go in a very long time. He is owned by a young man on the west side of the state. His name is Brian, and i will do him a favor by not trying to spell his last name from my memory. Duke is out of Trent Gordon's Dale Jr., and a bunch of Sackett Jr. I know just a few coon hunters, and of the ones that have hunted with Duke most hold a high opinion of him.

Yes, I am a Duke fan.

My judge dog is dang sure deadly on running coons even rutting boars in late January/February. I will not hunt him in summer because he will wipe out a litter of young coons in a hurry, he is wide open on track and super fast for a big hound, too smart to competition hunt though.

You dont see it much because they are not born very often. I'm not talking about a simi silent dog. Ive seen several of them catch coon on the ground but a full open mouth dog that consistently catches them is just a freak that pops up now and then.

I have owned one, he ran everything to catch and treed only because the track didnt go any further. Dont make the mistake of thinking that comp hunters dont want them. I ran up several good scores with the dog. It took a while to get him broke off of junk when he started. He treed several fox and would leave dogs running a bad track to run a deer out of hearing just to come back and tree ahead of them on the track they had been running when he left. He was just about half crazy going through the woods. He was hurt all the time. He put his right eye out somehow when he was two and died when he was three. His name was Toby he was a Wild Casey grand pup top and bottom out of my Betty female.
This is him on the tree and a younger brother to him.

I had one off Harry semen. He was not silent or semi silent. If anything he was a tad to open. He would catch em on the ground though. It amazed me because it just don't happen here. He ran to catch.iF it wouldn't climb it was caught. All the while him bellering and barking sounding like a train through the woods. Course he's dead now but Harry semen did throw him.

The semen or live doesn't make a difference I can give plenty of ref on frozen semen pups that are doing there job and making old dogs look bad rom live semen are any other cross !!! When you cross coon dawg to coon dawg you up your chances a lot!!!! Chk out a little female named pro bait finished top 20 in ukc world final four in pro hunt and mutliple other wins at 13 months old !!, her littermates are doing there jobs aswell .

Here in eastern nc imo a track dog ain't one that runs to catch. Running to catch is just the way that dogs hunts and honestly with a coon running that's a hit track and all dogs should be trying to catch.....a track dog is one that can go in these thick woods in waste to chest deep water and put a coon in a tree at the end of it that's tracking...running o catch is running a hot coon that honestly even a sry dog can run fast on a hot track....it takes a coon dog to work a track in nasty conditions and put meat at the end of the track.
