First thing you MUST do is split them up. Only hunt that pup by it's self. When going in to the tree, do not praise nor punish this dog until you search the tree. If you feel confident there is no way a coon can be in that tree, walk up and scold the dog with a rough voice. What ever words you use to scold, be sure to use every time you find the tree to be empty.
Now after you scold the dog for the coon not being there, leash the dog up, walk it 30-40 yards away from the tree, and then walk a complete circle around the tree, until you see they dog start showing interest in scent on the ground again. If the dog never picks up scent lead it right on out of there, BUT if the dog does seem to show interest like it has picked up a track (scent again) ENCOURAGE the dog to find that scent and release him to see if they will work the track on out of there or at least to a different tree.
You MUST remain consistent with this practice until you see the dog getting better at picking up scent leaving the tree. After about 30-50 times of this you may be able to use the command word "only" to get the dog to get down off the tree and start looking for the track. But the dog first must learn the command word, and then "second" understand when you are wanting it to preform. And it takes repitition for a dog to learn this. Some learn quicker than others, so a lot of this will depend upon your ability to be consistent, and the dogs ability to understand. Good Luck!!
