today's tracking systems..... help

As i have stated in several posts, I haven't cut a dog loose since 2007. I had a F&L that looked like the antenna from my house in 1982. When i quit there were a couple guys using the small (non gps) handheld jobs and they didn't work at long range. Now i come back to find all these Garmins that work off GPS. Can someone explain the difference in models and just a overall definition of what is needed to track with them? I have pretty complex gps units on my bass boat so I'm not completely lost when it comes to GPS. Thanks

Pretty simple really. But todays Garmin in comparison to the old beep beep's is like comparing a model A ford to today's Lexus.

They both will get you where you need to be, but the Lexus has built in navigation that not only tells you where you are right now, but also tells you where to turn to get to where you want to go, LOL.,

Todays Garmins were marketed like this. The model 220 hand held was near the beginning. You hold the on button, the system comes on, it links to your Garmin tracking collar (DC-30) and it also links to satellites in the sky, and it showes you on your screen, where you are standing, as well as where the dog is standing (In my part of the country) up to about a mile consistantly.

Garmin then came out with a 320 hand held, and the DC-40 collar. Same principle as mentioned above except that the systems seem to link up faster to each other plus they added a few additional bells and whistles.

A year or two after that Garmin then came out with the Alpha system. This system is a combo system in the it has the capability to track and shock, all from the same system, thus eliminating the need to have a tracking AND training system. With the Alpha they are two systems in one unit. More bells and whistles than the 320 system as well.

The 320 system cannot track the (original) Alpha collars and neither could the Alpha system track the (original) DC-40 collars.

Now Garmin has came out with the 420 system That can track most every collar but cannot shock.

If I was looking to purchase a system I would not buy anything older than the 320 system as the 220's are older and being phased out. The 320 systems may very well be on their last leg as well with the introduction of this new 420 system, but you can pick up a used 320 system for significantly less than the price of a new one and probably still get a few years of service out of it before it becomes obsolete. Hope this helps a bit.

if someone told me they were taking my alpha away I would quit hunting. seriously that is how much I like it. the e-collar training is better than anything I have ever used and I have been at this game over40 yrs. alpha has everything u will need until they r made obsolete cause we all know that is technology and they have to come up w/toys to continually get our money. seriously though......alpha u cannot go wrong.

If you plan on hitting some hunts keep in mind that the alpha needs a T5 collar. Which is what they sell for the 320 now too. It doesn't have the shocking capabilities that the TT10 or TT15 do. Just FYI

I am with bert52, I simply love my Garmin and I hunt 6 dogs at a time by myself in big country. I also use the DriveTrack 70 in my pickup which makes it much easier for me to keep up with the dogs while roading which is the only way I hunt.
Adios,
gary

I came by other day but didn't see your truck. Send me your phone number catfish, lost all my contacts a while back when my cell took a crap. I'll be bringing you a 150 class soon. Well probably not but I'm about to bust something to put in the freezer.
