Prednisone For Dogs

The best luck I've had is PREDNISONE. 5MG TABLET
10 days 1 tablet each day.
5 days 1/2 tablet each day.
5 days 1/4 tablet each day.
Always do the complete treatment, even if their voice improves before you finish the 20 day treatment.
You usually can get it from a vet. It is a steroid, not very expensive.
I have had good luck with it.

Seems like lots of people looking for help for barked out dogs. Thought I would repost this. Best luck I have had for hounds that become hoarse. It's cheap, but you can only get it from a vet. Dog must be kept quiet, and you have to do the whole treatment before hunting dog. Good luck.

I haven;t had to give it to any hounds for barking problems yet but I have a cocker that's stuck on them until the day he dies for a digestive problem. It's amazing the attitude those things give a dog. He was the sweatest dog you could ever meet until he got on the roids now he's Mr. Attitude. It's almost funny sometimes trying to correct him.
It's not that he's actually mean he's just down right baligerent. LOL

Be careful....Have you ever heard of "Roid Rage"? Didn't Pro Ball players "use to" use steroids? Are we going to have to start drug testing dogs? I can just see the winners at a big hunt lined up to pee in a cup. You might want to check out the side effects before you start giving them to your dog. Prednisone is a wonder drug but it can have consequences.

That's what I was saying about the cocker. It's almost funny to deal with him now but you deffinately do have a whole different dog when they're on them.

Prednisone is considered a steroid but it's not in the same class as the steroids illegally used by those in sports. These are corticosteroids and are similar to cortisone which is a naturally occuring hormone in the body responsible for dealing with stress. In fact it has almost the complete opposite effect on the body as testosterone. Cortisone breaks muscle tissue down in the body and testosterone builds it up. Cortisone is produced by the adrenal glands which are next to the kidneys.

Prednisone is used for many things in medicine but most of it's benefits are from it's anti-inflammatory effects on tissue and treating Addison's Disease (lack of cortisone production). It is commonly used to treat allergies and inflammatory skin conditions. At much higher doses, it can suppress the immune system and is used to manage auto Immune diseases and certain types of cancer such as Lymphoma. Used sparingly it works well for it's intended purpose. If used long term, it can cause a drug induced Cushings disease, diabetes, and other various diseases.

It can definitely lead to changes in behavior and aggression is one of them, although it is rare. I'd say 1 in about 200 show changes in behavior when used short term and lower doses as described for the purpose above. We use it almost daily in our hospital.

Prednisone, is an anti inflammatory drug.

not a steroid that causes aggression!

was at one time, not sure about now? was given to teenagers for sever acne.....

they are a Corticosteroid....
way different than an Anabolic steroid.....

side affects sure there are..... But, not a boost of testosterone!

side effects yes , but not the same as an anabolic!

they are a strong steroid! but , not for the same thing at all...

they are actually opposite steroids! lol

look it up....

I have a 6 year old female that lost her voice when she was 2 years old because the guy I got her from let her bark all the time. When she is treed 400 yds away I can barely hear her. All her pups have HUUUGGE mouths. Will Prednisone help at this point? I have it on hand, but I know it can cause problems if used incorrectly

Prednisone is a steroid. It's in the class corticosteroid. It can lead to aggression issues in dogs. It is considered a catabolic steroid where Testosterone is an anabolic steroid. Catabolic steroids tend to break body tissue ie. muscle tissue down over time where anabolic steroids tend to build muscle tissue up.

Hey Dave, I'd say she has a lot of scar tissue formed and the only thing that may help at this point is surgery by a good boarded surgeon. You can try the prednisone, but it would probably only be temporary if it did help.
