Pup training?

I would like to hear some of everyone's thoughts on the best way to start a pup. What age do you introduce them? What methods due you think work best? Drags? Hunt with others? What if you don't have a good pup trainer? Caged coon? Buddy system?

I have had quite a few pups in my days. Some turned out ok some not. I have never had one that I thought was above average. Most went somewhere else. So I am looking for new ideas. My typical way to start is to trap a few cage coon. Drag around and hang in a tree. I only do this a few times. Then I trap a few and turn loose so they can see them go. Then hunt with another dog. Usually a dog that can tree coon but is not perfect. I do let the pup run around for the first 3-4 months or so.

I have a Woody pup that I like the way he acts at 3 months. So I want to try something new, or should I say more successful, this time around.

Any ideas would be great and appreciated.

My best advise and might I add Iam not a pup starter with that being said the best luck I have had is let them be pups let them run loose as much as possible till 7 or 9 months and or long walks I let the pup let me know when it is ready the best I've ever had here started them selfs and became some of my best cooners and reproducers
Good luck with that pup Muckey

Every pup is different. How you train/start them all depends on the pup. You can't use the same method for every pup. I have even heard that there are some pups that train/start themselves and all you have to do is haul them to the woods and turn them loose. But then there are others that require a lot of work. I have started a lot of pups but I have also ruined a lot of pups so I am not about to tell someone else how I think that they should do it.

I'd say what you have done and what Mark talked about will work just fine.
One thing I try never to do...or if I do...I use it as a last resort, is to use another dog to show them what to do.
I like to see things come out naturally from a pup when it's ready.
Dogs evolved from pack animals...so there is still a lot of that instinct in them. So we have to be careful not to teach them in a pack scenario right at first...if we want to gauge their own individual natural ability. Once they start mimicking other dogs and playing follow the leader you will have a hard time telling what is natural and what is imitating. As a breeder...I think it is a very very important difference and I want to see what level.of natural ability is in that pup from the start ...before it's been interfered with or influenced by other dogs.
I have seen some pups that just didn't take off on their own after seeing a few coon. I usually give em a couple weeks or a month and try again. If by the age of 12-14 months they still don't show any interest in a live coon...that's when I would let another dog who does start baying one while the pup is tied back some but where it can see the action....then walk it into the action and see if it starts barking and showing interest. Sometimes this is what it takes to flip their switch and they take off and progress just fine...but it is not something I really like to see or do from a breeder standpoint because it's hard to gauge how much natural ability is present vs learned ability from imitating another dog.
You have a well bred pup that should be well equipped with all the tools needed to succeed. Good luck Jason...keep us posted on its progress.

Is 8 weeks old too soon to start a pup? I wonder how old Big Dan and Little Ann were when Billy started them?
