Info on Catahoula breed

Hello,
I was curious to see if there were any breeders/handlers of Catahoulas that could give me some information about the breed. I've looked online, but so far all I've found is information on the breed standard and registries.

Basically, I wanted to know if the breed makes a good cattle dog? I'm looking into a career in the beef industry and may get some cows of my own, so I wanted to get a dog that would have cow-sense and be able to work alongside me, but also be a companion.

I currently breed and train Labradors, so I do understand what goes into raising a puppy and training it properly. But, I've read that Catahoulas aren't for everyone and can develop behavioral issues if not given enough to do, so I wanted to learn as much as possible about them.

[BTW I've looking into the traditional herding breeds, but I wanted to check out the Catahoula as well, because it is a very intriguing breed]

TIA!

They are not for everyone. Mine were very one person dogs. I used them to get cattle out of brush ravens and ponds you only had to tell them once minded better than any kid I have ever been around. They are totally different than a Collie or a heeler. I've never had a more loyal dog mine went every where with me from 6 weeks old. Could be why they were one person dogs.

Catahoulas

You might want to ask this question at the Working Catahoula Association facebook page.

Yes, Catahoula work cattle, they are a different type of herding dog than a border collie or ACD in that they are headers. They can move cattle, but are more commonly used to bunch.

Depending on what your need is, they may or may not be the right dog for you.
