Dog sounds hoarse. Almost 2 years old...

Has always had a real good mouth, but something's wrong. Any ideas how to fix it? Talked to a vet today who didnt know anything to do for it.

I have heard allergies and vet can give shot for it and also have had my vet give a steroid shot on dogs that I had sometimes it helped.

Thanks

The vet I talked to was saying it may stay that way. Was talking about how that happens to English and Redbones at 6 or 8 years old. He mentioned people making fun of his Walkers for chopping and sounding like house dogs but joked that he could at least hear his Walkers.

I asked about steroid and he said he wasn't familiar with anything to do about it. I thought that was weird. He said we could try an antibiotic, but I don't think it's infected. He didn't seem to think allergies would be it either.

Chain

Is he on a chain??? Put him in Kennel. Excessive barking. Put a bark collar on him. Allergies. Or might just have a cold. Over weight. Or as the vet said some do go course. Maybe he is prematurely going course. Some dogs seem to do better when hunted regularly.

YELLOW MUSTARD, 2 OR 3CC A DAY, SQUIRT DOWN HIS THROAT, THEY DONT SEEM TO MIND THE TASTE. I WOULD ALSO PUT A COUPLE OF CC'S OF LYSTERINE DOWN HIS EARS , HOLD EARS UP SO IT GOES DOWN IN EAR CANAL, ITS AN ANTICEPTIC SO DONT HURT EARS AT ALL.

P.S. IF IT HAS BEEN TO LONG MAY NOT BRING HIS MOUTH BACK

His vocal cords are inflamed/irritated from either sinus drainage from allergies or too much barking. Give him an anti-inflammatory steroid such as Prednisone or Dexamethasone. But you need a prescription for them. Sometimes cough syrup especially with codeine will relieve the irritation. Or sometimes a mustard and honey mix will do the trick. My granddaddy would even add a little whiskey to the mix just for good measure.
If it was caused by too much barking, stop the barking. If it was caused by sinus drainage give him an anti allergy pill. He may also have a sinus or throat infection which you can treat with the LA 200 or some Pennicillin.
Now I am certainly not a Vet but that is what I would do. Just pretend like he is one of your kids and has a sore throat.

Doxycycline and Prednisone may help if scar tissue isn't already built up.

LA200 is Oxytetracycline. It has a similar effect/spectrum as Doxycycline but is formulated for cattle and other large animals. Both are anti inflammatory and provide a decent spectrum against bacteria causing upper respiratory disease. Don't use the LA200 as an injection as it can lead to bad abscesses in dogs under the skin and in the muscle. It can also cause muscle necrosis (death) if given in the muscle of dogs and nerve damage. Most people give it orally to dogs every other day at a maximum of 2cc per dose. I'd mix it with gatorade or water to dliute it because it can cause irritation to the esophagus and ulcers. Syringe water down after giving it.

A bark collar, Prednisone, and Doxycycline have been the most effective. Here is some more info on LA200 and Honey and Lemon recipes for restoring the larynx/vocal chords.

Oh my goodness, that Doc sure knows his stuff. It is a shame that we can't all have a vet like him. You should go to a Vet University and start teaching these new young Vets about hounds. All they know about are pets.

I'd go broke being a Hound Vet Richard. lol

Some of the stuff that comes up on these boards just shocks me. Ya just give that dog a gallon of motor oil. It will either kill him or cure him. lol

Let's see, Cherry Cough Syrup or honey mustard with a shot of whiskey or burnt motor oil, hmmm... I wonder which one I would rather swallow to soothe a sore throat?

You could always take your dog to one of those doctors that operates on Rock stars to repair their damaged vocal chords. I wonder what that would cost. Doc, maybe you could start a new specialty.....ENT Vet. There sure a lot of hounds with ear, sinus and voice problems these days. Years ago when your hound had a problem, you just got a new hound. Now everyone wants to "fix" the one that they have. I wonder if that is because a good hound costs so much these days or because they are now "family members" and no longer pets.
