young comp pups???

I have two redbone male pups that have been hunting by themselves since 4 months old. Both will split and hold pressure and tree nothing but coons. At 10 months old they are beating older dogs with no problem. I plan on comp hunting soon as I get my papers!!! Do yall think there to young??

Yes

They are way too young. Probably will not amount to anything. You might as well give them to me and I will place them in a good pet home.

Were they "naturals" or did you have to train them?

I put L's Tom Tom in a hunt when he was 10 mos old. He won 1st place by split treeing twice with a coon.

These pups tree only coons. Won't tree or back on a possum. Don't run trash. Will tree a coon and stay no matter what the other dogs are doing. Both are treeing coons solo. They been hunting by themselves since they were 4 months. Treed 13 coons between the two and they are honest as can be. They have been 80% accurate at such a young age. So that's why I wanna push them so early. These are Outlaw T-top and Hoffmeister bred. These are my first 2 redbone pups and I will say that I am officially a redbone man.

I definitely understand why you would want to push your pup's in the hunts when they are doing so well. This is just my opinion but I would be pretty cautious putting a 10 month old in the hunts. Why the rush? No matter how they are acting...good or bad....they are still just pup's and are still very impressionable. For example, what will they do if they encounter a mean dog or the babbling idiots? Lots of pressure in a hunt for young dogs. Why not just continue to hunt each dog solo at least through the summer and into fall. Give them a chance to start to mature a little. Just my opinion. Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Theres always risk of bad things happening for sure It comes down to whether or not its worth the risk to you. Im having the same problem with one I got but I think Im gonna wait a bit longer he is doing to well to get set back. Its also hard for anyone but you to say because you know how mature they actually are and what they will handle

Hmmm no pepper blood, thats got to be dissapointing Wade
Andrew, I dont doubt your assessment of those young dogs...but I would just say this...
You need to be very careful if your going to hunt them in competition because at that young age...they are still very impressionable and suceptible to learning bad habits from other dogs.
Personally, i would probably wait a while longer before I put them in a hunt and just keep building up their confidence. But if you do put them in a hunt...if things start going south dont be afraid to with draw them quickly.
Good luck young man, its sounds like you have a couple of very nice prospects

All in fun Shane,I figured you'd bite on that! I do agree with Mike and Shane, give those pups some time to mature .Pups can get messed up pretty quick, only takes that one 8 year old, battle scared dog hunting registered to ruin your young dog on the tree.Keep doing what your doing ,sounds like you have a couple nice ones Andrew.

I know Wade...I dont take as much of this stuff nearly as serious as some seem to think. I think most of the advice givin here is good and meant to be of help. We need as many good young reds winning as we can get...whatever their breeding so good luck to Andrew and everyone else with a nice prospect coming on this year!

Some people just talk and some people walk. I just love it when someone tells everyone about their dog and then goes out and shows everyone what they were talking about. How many posts on here talk about what a dog is "going" to do?

Exactly!
If you claim to be breeding or training competition dogs but those dogs are not putting up wins...then it's all just talk. Pics, videos, and bold statements don't carry much weight if your dog's are not proving they can win in competition. It always amazes me how some of the biggest talkers on some of the competition threads have hardly won anything with their dogs but are quick to bash on those who consistently win. I'd say this young man and his dogs have a bright future in the redbone breed.
Your dog is still pretty young so keep that in mind and try not to push him like you could a 2-3 year old and I will look for you in the winners circle down the road. Great job representing the redbone breed with a nice young winner!

Congrats Andrew

Real nice work you've done with your Red dogs. With Red being so young I'd keep him in the local hunts, where you have a better chance of knowing what dogs you draw out with. If you draw a mean dog or trash runner(s) you can withdraw. Entry fees are cheap compared to what those nice young Reds are worth to ya.
Pleasure hunting: Be sure to rotate between the 2, if one starts to really progress beyond the other one, keep giving the lesser one his share of nights. This way the real good one doesn't get hunted too much and burn out.

Thanks for the advice. I definitely plan on rotating the two. Juice hasn't been hunting the last month or so. I plan on tuning him back up and giving red another break. I'm just blessed to have 2 good pups that I can do it with.

If I had him, I would be down at the Wal Mart buying me some new tires and loading up my Jeep for a big Summer on the road. Darrin, does that advice just apply to dogs/pups? How old was Della when you packed your bags and hit the road with her? When you have something that you want to show off and they are just begging to go to town, it sure is hard to stay home.

What about us old guys that just talk about how we used to win and the dogs that we used to have? Can we talk about how much harder it used to be and bash on the guys that are winning now?
