Nice Guys

When it comes to competition coonhunting, do nice guys always finish last? Do you have to be a super aggresive, mean and nasty kinda guy to win competition coon hunts? Are all of the big winning handlers super aggresive? Do they take advantage of every rule that they can in order to win? If you are a real nice guy, do you have to find a handler for your dog who is mean and nasty if you want to win?
Or are there some winning handlers out there who are nice guys that practice common courtesy during a hunt? The kind that win by having a good dog and knowing what he is doing at all times and being able to call him correctly. Do these type of handlers still exist?

Yes I still exist.

I tell ya tho, and this is just my opinion, but to win often and be the guy who simply calls his dog and doesn't have to "help" his dog with rules, better be packing an awful good one as a slick rule rider with a less than average dog will usually find a way to win.

I'd rather lose often, my reputation means more to me than any dog, trophy or dollar I've ever met. But, also be the guy who enforces the rules on someone who's clueless and you'll still be talked about like trash.

This.
Some dad gets a cull dog given to his 14 year old son, drops the kid with a guide at a hunt, and you're all of a sudden a dirtbag cheater when you minus him for baying an armadillo. Or you cheated him by not giving him the win, when his dog walked into the tree with the cast and booger barked at the other dogs. Not all of the 'handlers' are pushy, slick, and crooked, a lot of times the loser wasn't packing much, or was a moron...

Richard please post this on the pkc and Chkc sites on their general message forums. And no I don't think the guys that are winning big in those 2 kc's are like Richard descibed. As a matter of fact I don't see these big winning handlers doing anything but packing good dogs and being good handlers.

Nice guys

I know from experience.if you are a laid back nice guy you need to hire a handler you will be money ahead if you do.the math was pretty simple for me.hunt the dog all week and have it ready then let someone else act like a jerk to bring you back the title . just my opinion

Yes there are still some nice guys out there competing with hounds. One that comes to mind for me is Mark Looney. I drew him at an Autumn Oaks event in the grand night division. Marks and Big River Dan had won many major events before this hunt, and placed very high in the world hunt after our hunt, but for me, a nicer guy to draw you will not find. Mark won by having a good hound.

I have also drawn a guy that has won the world hunt, many major money hunts and can say with confidence it wouldn't hurt my feelings if I never drew this person again in my life.

You don't have to be a major butt to win, but for the most part, that is what our country has become. And coon hunting is no different than anything else in our nation.

I've hunted with some purina race handlers(before it went to state hunt format) and some of them even though they did alot of big winning they were still nice guys to hunt with.

I agree I've had very few problems with competition hunting and jerks. A few but the good casts are much more common than the bad.

Where The Red Fern Grows, wasn't there a competition hunt with aggressive hunters in it? There is nothing new under the sun.

Nice Guys

Nice guys can and do win in competition hunts. Men packing a " coondog" do not have to bend/twist rules to win! Aggressive handlers are just trying to compensate for "lack of dog power". Knowing the correct rule/s does not make a handler a butthole! A lot of dogs need handler's help to where as a real coondog just uses a handler to get him /her to the hunt- they do the rest! IMO based on over 50 years of pleasure/competition coon hunting. Dave

An all the "aggressive slick handlers " as u put it wonder if this weekend or week nite for that matter either kc if we got a cast full of unprepared folks there that don't hunt there dog during the week don't know the rules shouldn't even have the dog at the hunt an a lot of times the dog should be fertilizer that think any rule or call or vote that's not to there favors they got the excuse we drew out with so an so the "paid handler " an so in so cheated the win when yes there are plenty of them type but to sterio type handlers that hunt dogs in hunt know the rules an pack dog power that are hunted up an ready to go is deff incorrect the higher up u go in the bigger hunts an such they deff are not dicks but they came to win an they do respect dog power so there is for sure two sides of the coin in my experience

Sure was! There was $$ betting going on prior to the hunt, redbones that quit a track on a river, a GHOST coon found by climbing its place of refuge, exchanging of money during the hunt on a bet, redbones that stopped treeing to go fight a $35 bootick named "Ol' Blue" in the river bottom after he broke his bailing twine lead and cold tracked the redbones instead of getting lonely and deep, and a 2 vs 1 fight during shine time that ended ones life when he tried doing poor Billy a favor by going after his alligator redbones with a hatchet LOL!

Allen would've had a field day writing that cast up ha!
