"The last days", is a reference to the tribulation. The church, i.e., the body, will not be subject to the tribulation. Still, how bad things will get is anyones' guess. If the conditions common to the rest of the world is any indication, it could be very bad for along time.
Then why are we being warned about what to look for in that chapter and turn away from, if it's referring to the tribulation, and not the days leading up to the tribulation? We wouldn't be here. That would make that a confusing chapter to me.
In my view there's lots of places in the Bible that give us warnings of bad times prior to the really bad times that are coming during the actual tribulation.
I feel we have plenty of instructions to be wise about things right in front of us, just one of many examples would be Proverbs 27:12. The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.
