Top red dog

What red dogs do you consider the top 12 comp dogs of today. No specific order but list the top 12.

I guess the only way is to judge that is wins with top compation moor then once proven winners done well at major events
Cali
Mac
Turkey
Shine
G man
Boone
Woody
todie
Mack
Shock
Cherry
T
Bruiser
danno
Rocker
Larrys freak
Rocky
Bree
Jim
Billy

Just a few I can think of all have done well at elimination type hunts a few world champ redbones state champs autum oaks purina and breed hunts most are cast winners and a few can score lots of points
Biggest thing a lot of them seem to be reproducing pups with the same ability
I'm shore I left out some but this is a loaded question
Thanks Richard for putting Kate on there but her mouth has cost her to many wins deep and lonely is nice but they can't out hunt there mouth but her mom does show up in a lot of these dogs three gen peds and if you study my list there is a few no question they should be on here and some that have some good wins and titles that they should be in the mix

Dual Grand Wigland Creek Royal Flush.

She had not been to town in a while due to Murrell not feeling well with multiple health issues. She did get out last Fri and Sat night to an added purse hunt. She made final 4 both nights.

Mark, you have a much better memory than I do. I still think that Ky Kate is a Top Red Dog, mouth or not. She sure can tree some coons. That is quite a list of real coon dogs, isn't it.

Thank you for you input on what you feel are the top dogs of today. Not sure what you meant by loaded question? This was for my personal reference to what was considered the best out there in the opion of some of the redbone folks that have been around and have personally seen these hounds go. I am still searching for that one I can win with up here. So when you see different people from different areas or line and or teams throw the same dogs on the same list it might help one who is looking for one. Not put to get anybody just searching for knowledge of the breeds competition hounds. Thank you again

Chris,
Coonhunters are full of crap. You have to go by what dogs are winning right now in the hunts. Can't argue with that!

I said loaded because in this sport it's what have you done lately a dog could be 5 6 or older and did his share of winning then put on the back burner we tend to have very short memerys in this sport unless you keep records of who wins what and were you can hurt feeling so every ones list would be diff
Like I said there some on my list like shock people are like what has he done he probably has the longest win list in the breed that's still alive and some would never even put him on there list

I'm confident after hanging around nearly anywhere on these UKC forums, especially redbone threads, anything becomes a loaded question after 4-5 responses whether it was intentional or not.

Choosing a top hound by one persons opinion is completely subjective. I like lists but I too really enjoy learning more about what is and was out there in the redbone world. I'd like about 3-4 months to tour the country and pleasure hunt with em all!

Gotcha. That's what some of us need is to see all that have and are winning. It's all just to make educated decisions for myself down the road. Honestly some dogs I know of and have heard of and a couple don't know a thing about. Which means I need to educate myself on those. All in all would like to compete one day obviously sooner than later so doing more homework. I'm extremely picky of what I want and have yet to have that. Have some that do it but not on the level I want as of yet we shall see they are still progressing. Just always looking into what's next

Me too and I have been doing this for 25 years. I just take what I have and put them in there. That way I get to see what is out there. If you keep waiting on that perfect hound then you will just be left sitting at home for the rest of your life.

Mark, you used to be able to do that in a week. Now it would take you at least a month to hunt with all of the "top" Redbones out there. I don't know if there are actually more dogs or you just hear more about the dogs. They do seem to be a lot more scattered out nowadays, though. You would have to divide the country up into at least 5 or 6 areas now. North and South won't get it anymore. You could spend a week in Indiana alone and another week in Pa and another in Il and another in Oh.

Man that would be some fun. But I bet that southern tour was boring...ha.

I feel fortunate to see what I have seen in red dogs in such a short period of time, but plenty more I've yet to take a look at. That's the key, I want to win but I also, more importantly, want to tree coon often HERE, and do it to my liking. So learning traits of certain lines is very important.

All makes sense Richard. I definitely don't sit home and wait. I been to hunts hell I've even won some. Doesn't mean that I've got what I want. Hell who knows maybe I do. As long as they keep progressing they might turn into what I want but they **** well better not stop progressing till they get there otherwise they ain't staying here.

PS. Richard I think you forgot how to count your list isn't to 12 yet😃

The southern tour was any thing but boring but we only treed 8 coon that week in four diff states in six nights but it did suck that the only dog we seen tree on a coon was the one we left Ohio with as are measuring stick
And all we heard before dark was are Yankee dog wouldn't have enuff hunt we got her off a tree every drop and we had to use the tracker to find her more then a couple times lol and she was a redbone

And yes Richard all we had was the red book to see what was out there to look at now we would be months looking

Yea I don't play that whole north/south bit when it comes to dogs. Some people just think they hunt thin coons until they get a real dog.

I was very pleased and excited to see Mac take me to places on my normal hunting grounds that most hounds never do, AND show me coons. And he's just one example. Ol Grizz of Ken Shew's pulled me off in a couple devil pits and rock cliffs as well. I like it when that happens...just as long as they have tha meat.

As far as a living competition dog.The one dog that I've hunted with that I feel could win anywhere against any competition is grntch Nitey Nite Little Red T.What I saw out of T was 1st strike,1st tree, independence, would cover if he had too, loud, drive, tree close and fast ,or get gone and get treed. He was accurate! I was impressed by this dog.I can't come up with 12 impressive living competition redbones that I've hunted with.I really like him John and Johnno.

I agree wade it's different trying to find 12 top dogs I've hunted with that I could make a list out of and call them elite...u can go by current winnings and all that but like mark said we have a short memory and a 9 year old that was winning all over the country 4-5 years ago gets overlooked sometimes..and Richard I agree shock should be in the top of anyone's list when he's on there wasn't anything at that hunt better then what was on the end of johnos or mine or whoever was cutting looses leash

Competition Dog GRNITECH CH GREATFUL DEAD RED, he is as good as they get, first and first, splits a lot, gets in deep and bye himself. He has won or placed in almost every major hunt I have put him in. This post made me realize its time to bring this dog out of retirement. I have had him in one cast at National Redbone days last year, that's one cast in 3 years. So I decided since some of his pups are winning in PKC that I should put some money on him too!! Last night, first cast since last summer!!!

Here is what he did last night in a 1 hr hunt.

First run, First and First, treed on a den tree with one other dog!

Second run, First Strike, Split by himself 150 yards from another dog had the meat, the other dogs pulled over to him as we got to the tree

Third run, Second Strike,he went in 700 yards all by himself and treed and had the meat.

It was a 3 dog cast

I seen a list up at the top of this thread and Red should be near the top of that list!!

Thanks for reading

There are a bunch of impressive dogs on this page.the positive side of breeding from years back to now you see what redbone breeders have put forth the effort in inproveing the breed, yhere is a lot of good blood flowing thru these bloodlines, that has made the redbone breed see more winners in the big hunts, but how many of those good hounds don't make it to the hunts is a big question.

Moonlight Aftershock and KY Moonlight Woody are two the the biggest, and most consistent male redbone winners of the last 5-6 years. They have been hauled all over the country and won in all different types of terrain under multiple handlers...that's a sign of a true top level hound.
Cali would top my list for female redbones as she has proven herself in the same way with Ragged Ridge Toadie a close second and has probably only been hindered by the lack of funds that Keith has been able to put behind her...(her owner is a working man with young kids) but her cast win % is as good or better than all three of the others. I have hunted with and and handled all four of these dogs. Don't own a hair on any of them...but I have enough first hand experience with them to give put them at the top of my list. There are others that would be on my list but I own or am partners on some of them and several others are still to young or as of yet have not fully been tested in a wide variety of different types of competition and terrains...but these four have and proven they have what it takes to be a serious threat in any cast...any time...anywhere.
