State Championships with no bench show?

What is a State Championship without a bench show champion? That is crazy to me and also UKC letting this happen. Come on, help the TOTAL DOG out that UKC was known for, dont let it die just because there isnt a ton of money being raked it. Why not just include the show packet free along with the hunt packet. WHY BURY THE LEDGEND OF THE TOTAL DOG.Every State Hunt it should be a given and mandatory show in the order..This needs attention, looking out for Total Bred Bloodlines.

I agree with this. I've always liked the shows and thought they should be included.

I agree. Illinois State Hunt didn't have a bench show. I am apprenticing as a bench show judge in hopes to help bring it back in Illinois. Very few local hunts have a Bench Show in our area. The majority I have seen are in Ohio.

Requiring bench shows at all major events may be on the right track!?

Maybe the problem is more rudimentary.
The desire to learn the relationship between excellent physical structure and how it directly influences performance in the field may be the key!?
The desire to have the knowledge to evaluate your beagles and give consideration to their physical attributes within the scope of the breeding program is basic to the solution. This comes into play with choosing a stud dog for your females along with evaluating puppies.

The UKC Hunting beagle program is 25 years old. UKC professes to be a Total Dog registry. And yet...
-Major events and local hunts without bench shows.
-Majority of UKC input is completely designed around the hunt. Most seminars are hunt rule seminars. Full Circle is completely devoted to rules and hunt scoring scenarios...
And still so many beagle breeders who will state they want "a rabbit dog not a pretty dog". A simple lack of understanding of how excellent physical structure enhances performance.

Registry actions have a huge influence on breeds. Ultimately it will always be up to breeders to help the breed reach its fullest potential according to both instinctive hunt traits and physical traits. With over 20 years of involvement with UKC Dog Events and Hunt events I know that they have consistently shown committed to satisfying the demands of the breeders/dog owners of their registry. That my be where the momentum must be placed to start the ball rolling in the right direction. Dan M

That is a good point but UKC needs to address this major problem.INSTEAD OF LETTING IT DIE LIKE WHEN they dropped the TOTAL DOG program, seems they are triing to give no respect to shows... BRING IT BACK or UKC needs better people. WHY DID THE TOTAL DOG PROGRAM GET DISCONTINUED? SO UKC started the ALLSTAR PROGRAM WHICH IS A COPY OF NHBA program...RIGHT OR WRONG? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Im not putting all the blame on UKC about this, not all, I do feel that for a Stat hunt that both a hunt and a show should be mandatory.. And they do need to bring back something like the discontinued Total Dog.. BUT MOSTLY I ask for more people to get involved and less watching..Give it a try, No professional needed. Everyone has to help if ya care. I see some fellow beaglers now building their own Total Dog Bloodline, thats a dog that can compet on the show bench AND in the field. give a bench show a TRY, IF YOU SEE ME AT A HUNT i D BE" MORE THAN HAPPY "TO HELP you..

The previous total dog program did not require the winner to be a great rabbit dog. A program that does place great rabbit dogs with excellent physical structure on a pedestal would be good for a Total Dog registry like UKC.

UKC clubs are the backbone of the registry so UKC will not likely dictate their bench show participation.

The solution is probably more centered around creating interest in the physical structure of our hounds and its effect on the breed as a whole. UKC and its clubs could have input in that direction.

Part of the problem that exists in the beagle breed has been created by some bloodlines that are focused only on hunt traits (Hunt dogs) and others based only on physical traits(show dogs). Show lines that have lost the hunt traits will likely never get them back. It will be up to the hunt breeders to develop a knowledge of physical characteristics and how they are beneficial to performance. Only then will they be able to select structurally sound pups and sires for their breeding program.

I do believe some sires that are from show bloodlines may offer improved structure while allowing the females hunt traits to shine in the pups. That can offer a jump start in the right direction. The lack of knowledge combined with no real reward for producing true total dogs, other than personal satisfaction, few will risk trying it. Regardless, there is still reason to learn enough about physical characteristics to select wisely even when staying completely within hunt bloodlines.

Just for the Record Randolph County beagle club state hunt 26 dogs in NC state show one day deal.

Red Oak Hollow Va state show 20 dogs one day show.

I know SC and Tenn State hunts are coming I will say they will be nice numbers to so this Old UKC boy is keeping the clubs in the south pushing the show may not have the greatest looking hunting show dogs but the fun is all the same the kids that are all of our furture is really getting involed this way and I love to see them smile.

bench show

The Don McVay Sr. Memorial Hunt does a excellent Job of combining a Great hunt with a very high number of Show entries All for the Total Dog Title. Total Dog is a high priority and it is shown in their UKC Memorial Hunt. Don McVay Sr. would be Proud as is his Wife Vada and Their sons. Great Hunt Weekend!

We would love to see more clubs wanting to have shows, in conjunction with their hunts. The reason a lot of clubs aren't having shows is due to the lack of support for them. Three and four dog shows just don't make it worth the license and trophy fees. I'm pretty confident that very, very few clubs would turn down the idea of having a show, if they could make any money having them. If the entry fees don't pay for judge's, license, and the trophy costs then it's a pretty easy decision.

UKC has never made it a requirement for any club to hold a show. As for the bigger events, maybe we should, I don't know. I'm not sure what you mean when you say its all about money? Matter of fact, I would be concerned that clubs might assume it was a money thing if we mandated such a proposal. Regardless, I'd have to check the records before In put my foot in my mouth and say that most State Championships are still having bench shows. But I'm guessing that most do.

WV State Championship

There were two shows:
Sat 23 entries I believe
Sun 14 entries

I support the Total Dog Concept!

Totaly support the shows but shame on me for not backing it up and entering the shows more often. I think bench shows should be free for kids 13 and under just to get them interested. Our club will take a hit financially just to get kids involved.

We used to have shows but lost money on most all of them. The only way i would have shows again is if the UKC didn't charge the club to have them.... or there was more participation.

i would gladly have shows if the UKC would waive the $17 fee and just collect their fee on the dogs shown... but I'm not paying $17 AND $1.50 per dog only to have 2 enter the show.

a few years back, i included the show in the price of the hunt fee... it increased the numbers - some - but it still cost the club $ at the end of the day.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR INPUT ON THIS.. I like that ideal to add it to the hunt form and wave fee.. Put more attention toward the TOTAL DOG not only hunting, breeders bring it together..It can be done..Then you'll have the best of both Worlds..
