A few tips.
Don't put a heavy cumbersome light on him. If it's heavy at all, eventually he'll be taking it off and not wanting to wear any light or deal with carrying a flash light. I've seen this happen several times with different kids. I'd go cheap as possible as long as it's rechargeable.
Don't wear him out, keep it fun. Keep him wanting to go. A 1/2 mile through the timber and back is pretty hard on 5 year old short legs, climbing over everything in his path (At age 10 it's lots easier). Take jerky, cookies and drinks. When he's 9 or 10 let him drive on the way home, late at night on the back roads (This is huge).
Play your cards right and he'll get hooked on the dog work later on. Then you can haul him around to the hunts when he's older and compete in the youth hunts. If he's still got a strong desire to be hunting with you on most weekends at age 10-16, then you are a winner.
Believe me you'll enjoy it as much as he does.
