NiteCh Bruces Pokey Bill was born in 1956 and lived to be 15 years old. James Bruce of Baxter, Tennessee owned him. GrNiteCh Bruces Pokey Bill Jr. was born in 1962. James Bruce sold Pokey Bill Jr. to Maurice Adams of Delaware and he was advertised at stud for several years.

I got to know Mr. Bruce in the mid 1970's. He was one of the nicest guys in the Redbone breed. The cross of NiteCh Bruces Pokey Bill and GrNiteCh Bruces Pretty Polly was one of the best Redbone crosses back in its days.

Old School Lingo

Man I love that old school lingo. Reminds me of the stuff my grandpa used to say.

"I have never seen Poke have the bellyache" is this slang for not want to go hunting? Is a, "lantern dog" a shine dog? Or one that won't hunt out of your light? Some of you old timers, help me out.

Looks like a nice medium sized hound with good ear and built like a hound.

And RFD 1. When you actually had to know your mailman. Cool ad.

Timber Jack goes back to James Bruce's breeding on the top side. His daddy GrNtCh Toussaint Red Talker was out of Griggs Gal who was heavy line bred Pokey Bill. I'd say some of the speed we see in today's Redbones comes from this line of dogs.

Pokey Bill wasn't pokey

Agree with is statement. I owned two out of Pokey Bill Jr. They were both lighter colored, big, leggy dogs that looked and acted pretty much the same. They both were hard hunters, semi on track, and good tree dogs. They had good track mouths but choked down on tree...And boy were they fast on track! As I recall, neither was very junky, either and started when they were nearly 2 years old. But then again we didn't take them out until they were 1.5 years old back then.

So
Shock, Big D, Deana all go back to wrong way ace, after him comes wrong way Billy and Pokey Bill IV.
I think this cross has been doubled up in the past what did it produce and what would you all think about doing it again?

Shock x Bree was a good cross there just now at the age some will start showing up at the hunts
Shane really likes that cross and is talking about taking Bree to a brother of shock

Question

Do you guys really think that a dog that has been dead nearly 60yrs still has any influence on the performance of a dog now?

It's an honest question. I was just wondering what people think. Is that possible?

Maybe, maybe with tight linebreeding over that time frame, yes...but there is so many other puzzle pieces introduced since 1961 that I would find it hard to believe.

That still doesn't take away from Pokey Bill. Without him there wouldn't be a lot of really good hounds. Just like a lot of other dogs from those times and before.

When a dominate reproducer shows up in a pedigree over 5 times I'd say it has a definite impact on the offspring 50-60 years later. Especially with frozen semen. We have dogs that go back to Timber Chopper over 70X.

Frozen

Definitely lowers the amount of puzzle pieces to get to that one dog.

Still, I can't tell you much about my own great, great, great, great, great, great grandpa and what traits of his I have. LOL
