As a vet student, this would be my rec. Totally not trying to be a smart @$$ or anything - I'd just want to see if it was marking vs. needing some antibiotics. Just saying this because I let my basset go with a UTI for a looooong time, figuring she was ancient and had decided housetraining was optional. Turns out she had such a bad UTI that her bladder walls were all ridged and thickened (we did a quick ultrasound). It was probably really painful but she never let on. And like pigsit says, the infection can ascend to the kidneys and really cause a problem (it's called pyelonephritis).
