I know she's still young (9 months) but I'm wondering what I need to do to help keep her on the tree. Two nights ago she ran a track for a little over 600 yards and began treeing really hard but only stayed there for a few minutes and left the tree before I had time to get to the tree. I'm sure it's a confidence thing and it may come with age, I just want to know if there is anything I can do to help.

Stay within 150yds of her as she is trailing if you can and when she locates get in to her as fast as you can and get her hooked at the tree. If she has the coon spend a few minutes loving her up and letting her tree and dumping the praise on her then give her the coon. Those first few trees are Huge confidence boosters for pups and if they have done the job right and you can be close when they tree and get to them Before they lose interest and keep them fired up then give them the reward, goes a long way toward getting them to stick long enough for you to get there. Sounds like you have a great prospect, good luck with her!

Thanks, some great advice!! She's had one shot out to her about two weeks ago. And she's Albert bred, goes back to two time and big time albert

Ive learned over the yrs. A tree dog supposed to be bred to stay. While yours is still very young. Id give her a little more time. But if she does that much more. Id get another. Never again will I go through it. For me to train one. Son of a gun has to stay till I get there. I had 2 in a row that did it. Gave em both till they were 2. Never did tree like I thought they need to. Never knew if they'd leave or stay. Coon shooting didnt help nothing. Wasted coons is all.

old country boy who always had coondogs told me he never took a pup or dog to the woods till it could kill a groundhog(woodchuck) by its self.
he would tease then with a woodchuck like most do with a coon,lay a track with and put up a tree,tie a rope around and pull up and down tree ,then drop it to them when they got frouthing at mouth..

where i did different.
when they started treeing on it,,i'd kill and gut one and leave lot blood in belly cavity.pull up tree and when they got bugeyed,i would fire 22 and drop rope and let it fall to them and let them eat it,after a few times of this ,they wont leave tree and nothing going run them off neither,,lol

as the farmer said they will put woodchucks in hole dureing summer but after 1 good winter of coon and they will leave the woodchucks alone...

this is the way i always started a dog when i never had a good old dog to work them with.and it works

and woodchucks are open season in ohio.dont have to worry about game warden getting you for haveing coon out of season

I've got an 8 mo old doing the same thing but stuck with one the other night & got to him in time. sometimes, you may not be able to get there on time but when you do & they have got a coon pet them up n roll it out & that pup will start treeing them coon! Anyways at this age & time of year where I'm at it's been cold with frost on the ground at night.
I'd rather one trail & not stick too many trees ! I think if a pup is trailing more than treeing at that age then i think it'll make them better hunting dogs & they will make good track dogs! I'd rather one trail then tree on an empty with nothing in it! Pups are confusing sometimes but its time will come!!!

You cant use a pups age as a measuring stick and you cant make them do what their not ready to do,ive never took one to the big woods before they got grit and drive and if you watch the pup will let you know when its time,tighten up on tree and the right tree you need to tie her back and she will get better with age if its in her to do so,make sure that they are a coon up the tree she is on because if they are not you need to scold her and send her on because you dont want to help her lock down on slick trees.

Took her last night and she opened up about 100 yards from us and I ran to keep up with her and I heard her start to tree about 150 yards from me and she was still doing so when I got there but she quit and went around checking trees but kept coming back to the same tree and standing on it but wouldn't really get fired up after I got there so I shined the tree and sure enough there was the coon staring back at me. I got her to tree a little more and petted her up real good and shot it out to her. She seems to be accurate but she just has a problem staying there. Hopefully once she gets more confidence that the coon is there then she will start staying

Now next time if she dnt stick good tie her back and shoot it out let her get close enough to smell it and see don't let her taste a drop of it and see if that dnt help

9 months old is young. But these dogs are bred to tree and hold the tree, or hold the game, or which ever comes first. I would try to continue hunting the pup by itself and if that doesn't work bring a seasoned dog back in the picture. And never never let that pup taste another coon that it is not treeing when you get to the tree. Tie the pup 30 to 40 yards away where he can see your lights and hear that thump and then the other dog getting rewarded for staying at the tree and never let him even see the coon. If the dog is still doing this at 14 to 16 months old then get rid of him. Worst fault a dog can have in my opinion is to leave a tree with a coon in it. Its a deal breaker at my kennel and a sure path to the deer pack....And with Garmin its real easy to know the truth...Good luck sir and I hope your pup turns out to be a strong tree dog!

Tie her at tree when she's right let her tree it's just her age and lack of confidence. If it's smart it will all come together.
