???What have you learned???

I am curious what the people in our breed have learned through their trials, errors, and experiences. Anything. Training techniques, breeding theories, selection methods. What crosses worked? What traits have you found to be most likely to pass from generation to generation?
I am always willing to learn something so I'm all ears.
Thanks in advance.

I guess I'll start.
I feel like I have learned quite a bit through my experiences. But the biggest thing is this:
If I knew half as much today as I THOUGHT I knew 15 years ago, I would know twice as much as I know now...

No matter how much or what hunt they won it doesn't mean they are a coon dog. Doesn't matter how chalked full of top reproducers the papers are nor how well they match up when it comes to a breeding. Even in the bluetick breed too much tree an not enough track power is an issue. Just try an go out an train or buy the best dang bluetick u can instead of worrying about trying to breed the next great one. Better first start with the style of dogs that work for your hunting conditions then just trying to find best in the entire country an trying to make it work in your area. Don't be afraid to hunt your dog with trash dogs because it's better to deal with it then when u can do some training then on the weekends at a hunt. Run the roads as hard as u can before you get married

One thing I have learned is the guy that does not blow on his hound is usually the one that has a coondog. Hype rarely lives up to reality.

Probably the best advice ever!

Thanks for the replies. All good points.

Jake,

I know you guys have had some success and had some reproducer's. I also see that Jet is heavily line bred. Is that your preference or just how it worked out?

Just how it worked out Mike. Some of the best crosses on Jet have been outcrosses on Utchman and Smokey River. My preference is anything that suits me, linebred or outcross, just enjoy a nice dog.

1. I've learned that you are never too old to learn something new

2. The ones that continually blow up their own dogs usually don't have a lot to blow about

3. I never thought I would live to see "Coonhound Groupies"... it happened

4. Coonhound stud ads are for the most part more fiction than fact

5. An old country coondog that has groceries when he parks will win way more than he loses if given the chance to compete

LOL

Don't worry about those big new shiny trucks without any scratches on them and an $800 dollar dog box in back but when a truck rolls in with the fenders wired on with coat hangers and enough mud on it to scrape off with an ice scraper, that's the one to worry about. Never judge a dog by the way it looks, it may be skinny from hunting every night and you never know where that next great one will come from, most likely from some place you never expected.

I've learned a lot from coonhunting, one of the main things is to be patient sometimes and not try to be a coonhound celebrity.ive learned and saw that it's better to have 2 dogs than 10,can only hunt so many and it's better for you and them.next don't judge a dog or a person from wat others say, hunt the dog and meet the person ur self.last be open minded and always be willing to learn new things.

Great thread Mike!

I have come to the realization, the more I learn, the less I really know.

As has already been mentioned, seeing with ones own eyes is believing.

Keep and hunt the style of hound that suits you and will provide enjoyment for you.

Always keep it humble, and give credit where credit is due. A good serving of humble pie will be soon to follow when humility is ignored.

Always tell the truth, and be just as quick to share the negative as the positive.

When your hunting buddy ask you what his dog is running because yours is not opening, tell him it's a raccoon.

Buy a pup from a top cross or at least a top potential cross.

Your top hound may just be average.

A top track dog is hard to find.

A top tree dog is easy to sell.

Cheaters love to hunt 15 minutes alone at the end of the hunt.

Shock collars need to be worn by the trainer where they get shocked same time and intensity as their hound. Would be about the right amount of e collar use.

One thing that I have found.
I have only hunted dogs that I have raised, or are out of my dogs for several years now. So, what I have discovered may be specific to the particular family of dogs that I hunt, and some of you may have a had different experiences.

For the most part, the best dogs and most consistent litters have been out of parents that also came from deep, consistent litters with a large % making good hounds.
Now, I have seen a handful of outstanding individuals that came from litters where the larger % did not make good hounds. I have not had near the luck with these individuals from a reproduction standpoint. Just as good or even better from an individual performance standpoint, just not as apt to pass it on. Some of you probably think that I have been a little slow to catch on. You are probably right.

Another thing that I have noticed, at least in my dogs.
Tree style, and to some extent tree mouth, are way more apt to continue from one generation to the next, where hunting style and tracking ability have been harder to predict. I am fairly particular about the amount of "go" a dog has, and making one to suit me in that department, let alone pass it on to their offspring has been difficult.
Is this something anybody else has noticed?

Learned

how many people don't know the difference in a dog that will tree a coon and a COONDOG . After a lot of years lots of miles and LOTS of $$$$$ i have only had a couple i call coondogs. I've had a bunch of good dogs that treed coons.

1) TREEDOGS might fill up a scorecard all summer but TRACKDOGS will fill up the freezer all winter.

2) If you're looking to buy a good dog, don't buy one that's for sale.....find the hardest coonhunter around and see if he has one that "can be bought".

3) 1100 circle won't beat 150 plus know matter how ya add it up at the end of the night.

1. People will believe a lie or rumor more than the truth.

2. There is no substitute for hunting the dog-keep them in the woods.

3. It ain,t "In the blood" -it is in the genes!

4. Most people giving out breeding advice have had little or no success.

5. There is no one breeding method that works. All of them have the potential to be good. All of them have the potential to be bad.

6. You must know what you want in order to recognize it, buy it or ever have any hope of breeding it.

Enjoyed the post and the responses. When I can help let me know. CW

Nice post

1. I have learned if you like and are willing to feed it then it's yours.

2. Go hunting with the dog more than once before making a up your mind if all possible.
3. Know what your looking for in a stud and know the ancestors behind what you will be breeding into.
4. I don't like going to slick trees all night.

5. I know all of us can remember when the dogs where way more accurate then they are today.

6. I learned I don't like mean treedogs

7. I have learned I don't like a dog running trash and falling off treeing a coon and people saying the dog can run track others can't smell.

8. I have learned there is jealous people in all breed and one bad word and ruin a dog OR persons.

9. I have learned to treat people like I want to be treated. (respect)

10. Don't buy a dog off the chain buy it in the woods. If a person sells for lesser price it probably will have faults the you won't like.
