One thing that I have found.
I have only hunted dogs that I have raised, or are out of my dogs for several years now. So, what I have discovered may be specific to the particular family of dogs that I hunt, and some of you may have a had different experiences.
For the most part, the best dogs and most consistent litters have been out of parents that also came from deep, consistent litters with a large % making good hounds.
Now, I have seen a handful of outstanding individuals that came from litters where the larger % did not make good hounds. I have not had near the luck with these individuals from a reproduction standpoint. Just as good or even better from an individual performance standpoint, just not as apt to pass it on. Some of you probably think that I have been a little slow to catch on. You are probably right.
Another thing that I have noticed, at least in my dogs.
Tree style, and to some extent tree mouth, are way more apt to continue from one generation to the next, where hunting style and tracking ability have been harder to predict. I am fairly particular about the amount of "go" a dog has, and making one to suit me in that department, let alone pass it on to their offspring has been difficult.
Is this something anybody else has noticed?
