So Does Anyone Else Have Bad Nights or Just Me??

So does anyone else have bad hunts or am I the only one??

So here was my hunt last night. I took Fancy and Sal last night. I think I had a dog that was going thru her terrible 2's last night!!

Drop #1:

Fancy trees about 200 yards from me, Sal moves track on another 200 into someone's back yard and gets yelled at by the home owner and Sal comes back a little closer, Fancy is slick and boot her off tree.

She strikes again about 200 yards another direction Sal Opens with her. Walk into tree and Sal is spilt from Fancy and both trees are slick , But on a positive note Sal does split and stay .
Boot them off of there trees and dogs move on.

Fancy and Sal then go 400 yards up the holler, trees again. Walk into tree and they have two coons up one tree!! Yeah!!! Finally a coon. Shoot one coon out.
Then recut from there.
Dogs go another 400 or so and reopen, they are moving track really good and are doing a nice job, Fancy trees, Sal Moves on, about the time we walk into fancy's tree she leaves and moves track on another 200 and Boo Hoos around like the track just vanished.
At the same Sal get board, moves into an open field hits something, and runs almost 1/2 mile across open country ( I don't believe it was a rutting coon) .
Then Fancy finally trees where she was boo hooing around. Its slick again, so with a really nice tug she gets pulled off of tree. On a positive note Sal does return after his little jaunt and we catch him and go to truck.

Drop # 2
Just turned Fancy out this time, she puts her head into wind and runs wrong direction behind a bunch of houses. She goes about 600 yards right behind someone's house and trees in there junk pile. I get yelled at by home owner not because I am causing a ruckus in there neighborhood but because I couldn't get the coon out of the junk pile to kill it. "She said it was eating her cat food off of her porch. Catch Fancy return to truck.
Recut again, She then heads back across road to houses. Run her down 300 yards and catch her in the another neighbors yard.
Recut again, she finally goes the right direction goes 600 yards to woods and ends up treed in a small cavern, nothing seen . So Recut her along the field she goes around the corner about 100 yards in front of me and gets into skunk. Oh ya and it stinks!!! :| She leaves skunk on her own and then goes another 600 and trees a coon!! Yeah Finally another Coon
Walk her back out to big field recut goes about 500 yards and trees on a Den. Nothing seen but was a den.
So by this time I figured I have taking enough punishment for the night and start heading back 3/4 mile to truck.
When I get about 400 yards to truck I see another Skunk in field in front of me. So I thought this would be good training session. Turn on shock collar, cut Fancy loose, she gets a lesson, and instead of stopping and coming back, goes right by the skunk and goes 800 yards the other direction, across field to woods and trees another coon!!!
So with 3 coons, 2 skunks, 1 den, 1 left tree, a cave, 4 slicks, and a lot of walking I called it a night!!!
So does anyone else have bad nights or are they all good???

Bad Night

I am glad to see that I am not the only Coon Hunter out there that has had a bad night.
But, from what you have said yours was not completley bad. You had coons in a couple of trees and you were able to have some positive training sessions also. Remember you cant correct bad behaivior without having bad behavior.
When I have these nights I just laugh them off and say it was still better than sitting at home on the couch watching nothing on TV.

Oh my goodness, some people just can't be satisfied. That would be a great night for me. You treed 3 coons! It takes me a week of hunting to tree 3 coons. And you only got yelled at twice.

Good and Bad nites

Monday went with Ted Baker to deer club, season ended Sun and they want us to kill every one we tree,so owner's kid went with us to be sure. Turned 2,5yr old male 2, 2yr females off deer feeder in planted pines, went 900yd treed then moved another 200 treed we drove around and when got 200 from them were off tree then 2yr female treed and had sow. Turned same dogs out off feeder struck and treed 250 yd shot out boar. Turned 3yr and 1yr females out with 5yr male and 2yr female from first 2 drops off feeder struck quick ran it bout 1mile counting all the loops and treed nother boar. Took my 5yr male and 3yr female Tues went 350 treed but when got there were going between trees 20 yd apart both empty, sent on they went 1mile to bigeer creek down it 1mile opened few times hit bigger creek went up it 1/2 mi along lake and treed in branch shot out boar. Had 1yr male that was found in road by neighbor and given to young Mexican and he struck track in woods at drop and trailed to another boar while I was gone to my dogs. Last night went with Ted to another deer club had 3, 5yr male littermates 2, 3yr female littermates 2yr female 9mon male put 2 armadillos in holes, something in 5yr replanted pine cutover blackberry briar patch of Brer Rabbit and couldn't get a track run by 3 Coondogs. I would say it was a typical week except no coyote, fox or deer races.

Talking Jared

That is just kind of a bad night. I have worse, but I would have quit sooner than you did. My hats off to you for having such patience and staying out there when things were going bad. You'll probably end up with a couple good hounds, hang in there buddy.

Jared, I've had my share of good hunts in early season but I've had more struggles this season than years past. I don't know why either, we've had several warm nights that we feel would be perfect for coonhunting and it turns out to be the opposite. I'm getting the same reports from hunting buddies throughout Missouri. I wish I could say that it's a lack of coons but a close friend is a local trapper and he's had a record year.

Temper control???? He left some parts out. They have "learned" not to tree a possum. Travis, it is not just Missouri and maybe it is our dogs. Around here all of the slow dumb coons are gone. Only the fast tricky ones are left. Kinda like all of the big bucks who are nocturnal now. But the rut is fixin to start and the boars are going to get stupid pretty soon.

It seems to me that patience is a big part of training dogs . I think a lot of people give up on some goods ones. Some dogs mature a lot faster than others. So after the terrible night from the night before,
Fancy redeemed her self last night treeing 2 Coons and a den with no bull crap in between. I guess that's why we love the sport so much , You never know what's going to happen. Isn't that why we keep training and hunting these pups and young dogs???

The answer to that is "YES". It is like a box of chocolates and each night is usually an adventure. The type of dog can add to that adventure for sure, but each night is a chess game played in the dark between the coons and the dogs. We just get to listen and pick up the pieces lol.

Richard I was actually in a PK$ hunt last night. She did really well. She spilt twice once with a coon and the other on den, it just come down to the den. We saw a coon in the other dogs den tree and we couldn't in her den tree. It's funny how one night makes a difference.
Brian, I didn't mean to make you depressed. I thought I was the only one that those nights. You mean other hunters have them to. It makes me feel better knowing that.

You Northern guys are either just spoiled or have a lot better dogs than I have. Chad, that wasn't a bad night for me. We made a den tree and treed a coon. I guess that a good night, a good prospect and beauty are all "in the eye of the beholder".
