Memory Lane

As coonhunters we often sit around and tell stories about hunters and hounds of the past. I really enjoy those stories and have learned so much from old timers along lifes journey. I would like to hear everyone's stories about hunting/hounds. I believe we get side tracked and caught up in the bright lights sometimes and seem to forget the real true love and meaning of this wonderful enjoyment we call Coonhunting.... Please share your Memories.

Butterbean

Bean, tell us again about the night that someone got lost and called 911 and told them to send in a helicopter after him.
Anytime that you get Butch and Danny together, you are going to hear some awfully good stories. The sad part is that they are all true.

Ok here is one on OL' SILLY BILLY.... Billy was hunting with Butch one night and they was hunting BusterII. They was hunting in some big territory in Harrison County Indiana where the hills are long and tall. They kicked Buster II and he quickly got thorough the country and got treed. Well Billy put a tracking collar around the antenna of the truck so he could find his way back, it was the beep beep kind. Billy got to the tree and two hours latter Billy is still not back to the truck... Well Billy had a cell phone but couldn't get signal, finally he got enough signal to call the truck man Butch Roeder... Well Billy asked Butch to blow the horn so he knew which direction to walk out... What Billy did in the next few moments was priceless... He heard the horn and started walking, a few more hours went by and still no Billy. So Butch was getting worried and tried to drive around as much as he could and still not a peep from Billy... Well Billy finally got another signal on his phone and called Butch again and asked for him to blow the horn and guess what. He heard it! He started walking in the direction of the horn again and finally realized that the horn he had been following was the one that he heard on his cell phone.lol He was able to get in touch with Butch again and realized that he was looking for last years Easter eggs.lol Billy finally said I am not walking another step I am tired wet and lost.... Butch said come on out of there and Billy said I'm not going anywhere, send me a helicopter,4 wheeler or the National guard.lol So Butch drove all the way back to town to the Harrison county police department and said I got a man lost in the forestry and he needs help getting out. Butch wasn't 100% to himself at that time but since then has found Jesus Thank God. Well the police came turned on their sirens and lights and tracked Billy's cell phone and he finally got out safe and sound... I think they said Billy walked about 17 miles that night. He was miserable but also glad they called the cops on their self..... Billy learned after walking 17 miles up and down those big river hills and bluffs that you don't always follow the sound of your cell phone. Title of the story is Ring around the Rosie ashes ashes and Billy fell down. Bwahahahahahahahahahaha

I was hunting a female one night many years ago. She went up a deep holler and got treed up on the side of the mountain. She didn't sound exactly right but she was treed so I made my way up to her. It took a while and when I got there she was going back and forth between 3 trees about 20 yds apart. When I shined them she had 3 coons treed, one in each tree. It was one of the stranger things that I have seen.

I was hunting with Stacy Davis down in South Georgia one Jan night during the Winter Classic. On the first drop we treed a coon and knocked it out. On the next drop we treed a coon and knocked it out. We were on a roll. On the next drop the dogs got in and got treed but did not sound "right". When we got to them, they had 3 wild hogs bayed up. The hogs broke when we got close and one of them made the mistake of trying to charge/run over Stacy who was toting the rifle so Stacy dropped him. We led the dogs back to the truck and dragged the hog back. We went back to Stacy's, skinned, gutted and quartered the hog. We then went back out, made another drop and treed another coon. What a hunt, 3 coons and a hog in one night. And the next day, we bar-b-qued the hog at the Albany Fairgrounds and fed everyone. He sure was good.

Bean, you need to get Danny Barrett to tell the story of the night that his dog treed a mountain goat. It is one of the Urban Legends of Canton, NC complete with hand drawn pictures.

Here is one on Butch Roeder.... It took place at National Redbone days in Holmesville OH... Everyone went out pleasure hunting after the competition hunt was over. Butch was getting eat up by mosquitoes, So Butch decided that he needed some OFF. Well he went and got some out of the tool box of his truck. He sprayed it all over his face and clothes and later realized that he was having difficulty breathing and seeing. He soon realized that the bug spray that he put on was not OFF, it was RAID WASP KILLER. I bet he never makes that mistake again. Bwahahahahahahahahahaha

There are a thousand Butch stories for some reason. Like the time at Redbone Days in Brazil when he and Mike drove off in Tim Bolins truck.

Once Terry Ramey, Tim Brewin and I were hunting in a cast at Southern Redbone Days. I had Little ZacK, Terry had Dixie and Tim had Mailman. It was bitter cold and had rained a lot that year. We wandered around in a swamp up to our knees half of the night but everyone managed to stay dry. We were real proud of ourselves and commented on how good we had done. Just as we got back to the trucks, we all three stepped in the ditch beside the road and went up to our chests in the icy water. That is a memory that I won't forget but it wasn't a pleasant one.

Different story Bond, that one is still too vivid and traumatic. I thought that I was a goner that night. I think that I still suffer from PTSD thanks to that night. It was one of those, "my life flashed before my eyes" ordeals. On the way back to my Jeep I thought seriously about just laying down in the snow and saying goodbye cruel world.
On a lighter note, why don't you tell about chopping down a tree on the golf course one night.

Who me chop down a tree on a golf course why I am a law abiding citizen the only thing I have ever done was when you and Jarred set met up twice to get me caught by the same Indiana game warden all in one night besides them golfers looked at all them wood chips and probably thougt it was a beaver but I wonder how they scored that since it kinda feel in the green would that be in the rough ?

But now Linkous can tell you one on how to use a smoke bomb to smoke one out of a den tree that is if the statue of limitations is up

I wonder just how many coonhunters have found out the hard way that if you light a fire in the base of an old hollow den tree that it will act just like a chimney and suck the flames up through the tree and out the top? Here is a true story that happened to a couple of my firebug coonhunting buddies back when times were a little more lax.
Their dogs treed in/on a hollow tree that was broke off about 75 feet up and had a hole in the base. They built a fire in the hole but the whole inside of the dead tree caught and flames were roaring out the top. It was only a few minutes before they heard the sirens from the local volunteer fire department and police. Well my buddies ran off and hid in the woods. When the police came screeching up they ran over my buddies best dog who had gone back to the road and killed him. When the dust had settled and my buddies went back to the road, the police felt so bad about killing their dog that they just let him go with a warning not to be setting any more trees on fire.
Nowadays, they would go to jail.

It is the law of averages. When you hunt as much as I do then one or two of them are bound to be "memorable". When you hunt young dogs in these mountains and thin coons then you are going to have some "adventures". Some guys bad hunts are good hunts to me. And also I don't keep secrets very well. Some of my "memorable" hunts others would just as soon forget.

Doc, surely you have some good memories from the old days up in Wisconsin when you hunted with those big name dogs and handlers of yesteryear? Share one with us. Don't be so "stingy"? When you share a story, you don't lose it. You aren't giving it away.

I SET MORE THAN ONE TREE ON FIRE BACK WHEN I WAS YOUNG,BUT NO ONE CARED THEN BECAUSE WE BURNED ALL OF THE PASTURE'S OFF EVERY YEAR,GRASS WAS BETTER THEN AND NO TICKS,NOW DAYS YOU BETTER CALL THE FIRE DEPT. AND YOUR LAWYER BEFORE YOU DO A CONTROL BURN.

Buck and I went hunting one night several years ago. It was in September and was a rainy/drizzling type of night. We took Sally, Shadow and Lexus. We cut the dogs on the upper side of the farm and after a couple of minutes they all struck and started moving pretty fast towards the mountain. We had coon run that way before and go to the top if the mountain and cross over and then the dogs would get them treed just over the top.

Well, up the mountain they went and crossed over. We waited for a few minutes to see if maybe they would come back on our side but they didn't. I decided to go to the top and see where they were.....we just had the beep beep systems then. I took bucks system and and we left mine in the truck so buck could use it. .

I left buck at 11pm and started up the mountain. I got to the top about a half hour later and could not hear the dogs. I got out the tracker and could barely pick them up. So I radioed to buck and told him I was going after them, the only problem was they were on the Boy Scout reservation that is 17,000 acres.....yes.....17,000 acres. The other problem was it was foggy and drizzling so I couldn't see the glow of lights from any direction.

I started towards the dogs with the tracker and finally reached them at 2am. Sally, shadow and Lexus were treed solid but it wasn't a coon but a bear.

I couldn't get buck on the radio and not knowing exactly which direction I needed to go.......I just went up. When I got close to a top.....I tried buck on the radio and he answered. So I figured I was heading the right direction and when I reached the top, I didn't recognize it. So, buck tried to get a signal on the dogs and he did but he said it was very faint. He decided to go back to my house and get another collar from his truck and walk to the top of the mountain where I went over so I could track him. I tied the dogs up and got comfortable on the ground and waited. Once buck reached the top, he radioed me and gave me the frequency of the collar and I started tracking......oops....no signal. Thought maybe I had in the wrong frequency but turned out the collar was dead. Those batteries last for thousands of hours and that night it was dead.

So, had to come up with a new plan........yell as loud as I could and see if buck could hear me.......well, he did so he yelled back and I could hear him but I couldn't tell which direction he was in. I would start toward where I thought he was but could never get off the ridge I was on. After about an hour of this, I found a trail......and knowing the Boy Scouts, their trails will always lead somewhere so I just started walking. Lost buck on the radio and our phones were going dead too but that really didn't matter cause I had no signal once I went down the mountain. I just keep walking and walking. The dogs were starting to get tired and so was I. After a while I noticed it was getting daylight. I just kept walking. Finally, my phone rings about 7am.....it's my wife and she starts letting me have the 3rd degree causing her to worry.....so I "gently" let her know I was still lost and still walking and I needed to get off the phone and try buck. Couldn't get buck so I kept walking. An hour later, I see a cabin and a road and I realize where I was but didn't have signal to call out. Just keep walking and finally got some signal and got bucks voicemail. I left him a message on where to come pick me up and I just keep walking. At 9am, I finally hear my truck coming. I still had Sally and shadow on the lead and was just letting Lexus walk behind, all of us warn out. I was dehydrated from climbing around the mountains going to the dogs and then the walk out....turns out, I had walked 8 miles to where buck picked me up.

Buck had called in to work around 3 am and I had Allison call in for me. As it turned out, once I got home and got showered up, I went on in to work for the day. Then that afternoon Jason called and asked me to go to a pkc hunt with him so I said....sure....its just sleep, right. So, after walking all night, working all day including mowing the church yard, I went on hunting that night with Jason.

The only thing I told buck when he picked me up that morning was, if this happens again......I'm just going to stick with fishing....
