Buck and I went hunting one night several years ago. It was in September and was a rainy/drizzling type of night. We took Sally, Shadow and Lexus. We cut the dogs on the upper side of the farm and after a couple of minutes they all struck and started moving pretty fast towards the mountain. We had coon run that way before and go to the top if the mountain and cross over and then the dogs would get them treed just over the top.
Well, up the mountain they went and crossed over. We waited for a few minutes to see if maybe they would come back on our side but they didn't. I decided to go to the top and see where they were.....we just had the beep beep systems then. I took bucks system and and we left mine in the truck so buck could use it. .
I left buck at 11pm and started up the mountain. I got to the top about a half hour later and could not hear the dogs. I got out the tracker and could barely pick them up. So I radioed to buck and told him I was going after them, the only problem was they were on the Boy Scout reservation that is 17,000 acres.....yes.....17,000 acres. The other problem was it was foggy and drizzling so I couldn't see the glow of lights from any direction.
I started towards the dogs with the tracker and finally reached them at 2am. Sally, shadow and Lexus were treed solid but it wasn't a coon but a bear.
I couldn't get buck on the radio and not knowing exactly which direction I needed to go.......I just went up. When I got close to a top.....I tried buck on the radio and he answered. So I figured I was heading the right direction and when I reached the top, I didn't recognize it. So, buck tried to get a signal on the dogs and he did but he said it was very faint. He decided to go back to my house and get another collar from his truck and walk to the top of the mountain where I went over so I could track him. I tied the dogs up and got comfortable on the ground and waited. Once buck reached the top, he radioed me and gave me the frequency of the collar and I started tracking......oops....no signal. Thought maybe I had in the wrong frequency but turned out the collar was dead. Those batteries last for thousands of hours and that night it was dead.
So, had to come up with a new plan........yell as loud as I could and see if buck could hear me.......well, he did so he yelled back and I could hear him but I couldn't tell which direction he was in. I would start toward where I thought he was but could never get off the ridge I was on. After about an hour of this, I found a trail......and knowing the Boy Scouts, their trails will always lead somewhere so I just started walking. Lost buck on the radio and our phones were going dead too but that really didn't matter cause I had no signal once I went down the mountain. I just keep walking and walking. The dogs were starting to get tired and so was I. After a while I noticed it was getting daylight. I just kept walking. Finally, my phone rings about 7am.....it's my wife and she starts letting me have the 3rd degree causing her to worry.....so I "gently" let her know I was still lost and still walking and I needed to get off the phone and try buck. Couldn't get buck so I kept walking. An hour later, I see a cabin and a road and I realize where I was but didn't have signal to call out. Just keep walking and finally got some signal and got bucks voicemail. I left him a message on where to come pick me up and I just keep walking. At 9am, I finally hear my truck coming. I still had Sally and shadow on the lead and was just letting Lexus walk behind, all of us warn out. I was dehydrated from climbing around the mountains going to the dogs and then the walk out....turns out, I had walked 8 miles to where buck picked me up.
Buck had called in to work around 3 am and I had Allison call in for me. As it turned out, once I got home and got showered up, I went on in to work for the day. Then that afternoon Jason called and asked me to go to a pkc hunt with him so I said....sure....its just sleep, right. So, after walking all night, working all day including mowing the church yard, I went on hunting that night with Jason.
The only thing I told buck when he picked me up that morning was, if this happens again......I'm just going to stick with fishing....
