daytime hunting ???

ok here is my question, I have today off and thought about running my hounds during the daylight. We have about 4 or 5 in of snow right now and its been pretty cold the last week. I know I have seen pic of dogs treein in the daylight and have heard guys up north doing this but does it work. I have turned loose in late evening before dark and got treed but it was usually closer to dark. Just askin for some advice, tired of cleaning rabbits from beagle huntin lol thanks mike

I used to hunt a lot in the daytime and treed coons, on the outside, at 9 and 10 am!!! They do move. I have heard of a lot of bear hunters who tree coons in the daytime while hunting for bear. A lot of it depends on your coon population, and your dogs nose and ability to use it. If I wasn't so lazy and old, I would hunt more in the daytime, or early morning hours. You won't know til you try. Go for it!!!!

one word describes today AWESOME!!!! took ol boss and my young misty female today and tried some daytime hunting. Well here is how it went both dogs left out hunting good went about 625 yds and nothing said on the ground both dogs just fell treed both done a super job treeing on a big ol den tree I squalled but couldn't get him to come out.I then went down the road and sent them in again boss went one way and misty went the other both dogs ended up together .82 miles away both dogs half heartedly treed but moved on boss went bout 100 yds on down and treed again big den tree, squalled with every I had but couldn't get any thing to look. Misty went 725 the opposite direction so I loaded boss up while I was loading him up misty started treeing real good so I drove closer to her she stayed hooked for bout 20 min before I got there. I walked in and she was going nuts sticking her head in and out of the hole in the tree and treeing really good. The hole was about 3 feet of the ground off the ground I looked inside and low and behold mr coon was home lol I got a stick and aggravated the coon so he would growl and snarl at the dog she went nuts !! we done this for bout 45 min it seemed like she was going crazy I needed a chunk of barb wire but no such luck so finally I walked backout to the truck left misty there untied and got the gun she treed her but off the whole time I was goin to the truck. I went back and shot the coon inside the tree and pulled it out to her. All in all it was a great day and done a world of good for a young dog. I have to thank larry and eddie for hooking me up with a nice young dog I think she will make it lol I like what im seeing out of ol crocket so far. If you haven't tried daytime hunting I highly recommend it !!

go ahead and rub it in about the blueside lol but have ya noticed I always pick the blueticks with the most black on them lol. All joking aside I was a die hard black and tan guy and I just couldn't find what I wanted in the breed at the time I was looking. when you have walked behind a great one you spend a lot of time and money looking for their replacement when they are gone. I am very pleased with what is on the end of my leash right now these two young dogs make it fun to hunt again. We still have a ways to go before they are top shelf but for a couple young hounds they are doin ok.

Treed two and caught one on the ground after 7:30 AM this morning. I hunt mornings only, sometimes start out when it is dark but most mornings about sunrise. I love watching the dogs work, something that you miss in the dark.
Also teaches the youngsters to cold trail, an art that is sorely missed in most hounds today.
Adios,
Gary

Bobby sounds good kash is all coondog was really impressed with him the night we went get gone get treed with coon I like him !!

Gary I enjoyed the day hunt and am going to do it way more often it is great to see the dogs work one took one side of the creek the other went to the far side and worked great together as far as covering the area. Watching them work the wind and the area they were hunting. I have worked pups in the daytime but never really hunted older hounds in the daylight but dang sure will more often. I like being able to watch them work it will be a tool in my box to becoming a team with a hound from here on out. I am going to try to get the video attached to this thread that I took.

When I was young, I hunted a lot of winter mornings and packed the axe.

Lots of fun, can't do it like that a lot of places.

If you go to CarbonTV and look at CARNIVORE, you can see several episodes of daytime hunting for bobcats and coons. We just shot an episode of my bride of 40 years killing a big female lion over dogs in NM. I won't say that I will never hunt coons at night again but daytime hunting takes it to another level.
Like you said, it is great for pups as you can observe how they are hunting and how they handle obstacles that they encounter.
Adios,
Gary
