I been there and am there right now. Think back on the good nights the dogs have had. The bad nights help you appreciate the good nights.

I feel ya Matt , I been fooling with my pups and its getting old , One night its all good and a few nights ago my female ran junk for 2 hours before I could get my hands on her , so I laid up a few days ,, took the male out and he don't do much , But he did put a spark in me tonight ,, ran a nice track almost 1000yards ,, I was thinking if you cant run junk better than that you need a dirt nap ,, and Bam He got hooked like an old dog and had the meat ,, right next to 131 about 100 yards off of it I was able to drive right to him ,, so Keep pushing , them young dogs will come around

Everyone goes through a slump now and then...but like most of these guys have said, if there were no bad nights you wouldn't appreciate the good ones.
Sounds like you just need a break. Give the dogs and yourself some time off. It wont hurt the dogs any.
When you start back up hunt them during the day and get some of that trash out of them...otherwise, if you just go coon hunting again you will not have changed anything and be headed for the same slump.
I have never figured out why some guys just keep complaining but doing the same old thing. Keep doing the same thing with dogs and yet expect something to change...

I always have enjoyed hunting by myself but it seems I've run outta steam.I need to get a handle on all the trashing. The two young dogs I got are gonna get hunted seperate from here on out. They are the hardest hunting and grittiest dogs I've ever owned. That may be part of the reason for some of the trashing. They also bark too much on track which really irritates me.Ive wasted a lot of time deer hunting for the last two months. The wife also busted the brake line on my hunting truck 2 weeks ago.I bought a new truck but sure hate to take it coonhunting.Im gonna get my act together and hit the timber tonight.

Why not take this time and work on obedience wit the help of your young boys.....maybe dabble in the show thing. We take our hounds on walks in the woods just to be in the woods. Maybe just take one hound at a time and let the kids have some say in where you go...like a state park. Just a suggestion Good Luck!

My 2 young dogs are now 19 months old and still not been in the woods together. I am also 57 years old and keeping up on 2 at one time is too hard for one man. The trash is what you need to work on you eliminate that and things will get much better for you. Hard going dogs is what I want but they can be a little more challenging to break. Give YOURSELF a break and come up with a plan. You will be alright. Call me if you want sometime. 330-429-0146

I think pups is what makes hunting fun. They bring a mixed bag of goodies every night, you never know what is going to happen. Hunting a finnished old dog is the same thing every night, cut loose, tree coon, cut loose, tree coon. Boring. Variety is the spice of life.lol

you have the to many irons in the fire at the same time syndrome , if you are on a short time line a young dog or a trashy one will really try you more than any other time all though that is a problem you will have to figure out and fix on your own and work through it , i hope you get it worked out ..

When I was in your spot number one thing was limit yourself to one young dog. Number two, for a hard to break dog, I sent it way for a month to be broke.

I had 3 boys 3 years apart. Their bed time was 9:00 pm. I would read to the 3 boys every night at bedtime. It meant many nights not getting out until after 10:00 pm. I know many say quit for the sake of your family, but coon hunting is my pressure valve. So I concentrated on quality experiences rather than amount of hunting. As the boys got older they hunted with me on weekends. Now, all my boys are into girls, and I hunt alone, but at least we had several years I wouldn't change for anything.

I don't regret those decisions at all back then, but push comes to shove it is a decision that no one can make for you.

Either way, good luck!

I don't have a wife and I don't have kids. Heck, I don't even have a job. So I am able to focus like a laser beam with single minded attention on hunt'in and I don't anticipate any future loss of desire.

TIME

I kinda got the same problem just one young male though, gotta 3 month old, 8 year old, & a 13 year old, (kids that is) I work every day plus rotate shifts every friggin week it sucks but I have a lot of desire to coonhunt, my problem is the male hound I'm trying to straighten out. He shows flashes of making an above average hound, but he is wild as you could get. If it will lay a track he will run it, if it will climb he will tree it, he is also mouthy on track a lil more than I like, but on those nights he's right man he sounds great, huge locates nice tree dog.
He has made me realize I'm not experienced enough of a trainer to handle him nor do I have the time he needs. I wish I knew someone that I could send him too for a month or two that would really do him justice & get him on the right track. I'm more of a finisher rather than a trainer

I get like you every now and then Matt. im up at 5am, work 10 hours a day, drive an hour each way, wife goes to school late, kids in sports but i keep at it,often times you gotta push yourself to go. I also prefer to just hunt one dog....way less aggravating that way and these short days dont help nothing either. I get home an hour after dark and feels like im getting a late start hunting. Im ready for spring already !

It helps when the wife wants dogs and to hunt almost as much as me. We just sit on the tailgate and talk and listen for the dogs.

I agree Will.I just need 1 nice young dog.I been trying for 5 years to raise a young dog I like.Every one that makes a coontreer is a wide open, and chop mouthed manic.Listening to a dog bark everytime it's foot hits the ground is just painful to me.Tonight my 7 month old treed a possum and ran a deer.Old dog was treeing coon but pup wanted no part.My luck.lol

I am in the same bot you are.

Recently moved from the coast of Virginia to Highland County,Va. Having a really tough time getting permission to hunt any private land. Got tons of public land to hunt, but it's all either straight up or straight down. I am pushing 60yrs of age and just don't want to deal with the pain. Rob Gregory
