This thread is here to hopefully help those who loose a coonhound in a cave. Its very common for them to run into caves and get lost, injured, or just plain stuck. In the past two weeks, I have rescued two coon hounds and driven thousands of miles to do so. I have contacts that can get someone to your area if you are not in my reach. Please post here all information about the cave conditions, your dog, and some additional logistical information to assist in planning of your rescue. My creating of this thread is to facilitate the initial steps of rescue efforts, bring the community together, and educate others about the infamous stopped GPS signals.

The last rescue mission I went on was of course successful and involved a very tight squeeze. It was very doable nonetheless. Sadly, I found the remains of TWO other dogs from many years back. Lets work together to spread word of the resources Cavers are more than willing to provide.

I can't see how I would ever leave my dog in a hole. I'm pretty sure dirt and rock would never keep me from getting the dog.

I live in the area where this took place. Very nice article on the front page of the local paper with pics of the people that was involved in the rescue of this hound. Lots of mining breaks in this area and very easy to lose a hound in one. Takes some big kahunas to go down in one after a hound as well!!! Rattle Snake den heaven! Kudos to the guy from Missouri that drove and helped with this rescue.

what do they charge for a rescue like that? I love my dogs but my family must come first regardless of how I feel. I can see this costing $1000(s).

A friend of mine called the Spelunkers group out of St. Louis and they didn't charge him anything. It was a challenge for them and he got his dog back that had been in there for a few days. He was about ready to give up and I told him to give this group a call. He was glad he did.

Not saying some won't charge but they did not.

I lost a really nice Walker female in a cave last fall. Contacted a rescue group in Cookeville Tenn. They were quick to respond, but due to a large pool of water they could not get to my dog. It's good to have people available and willing to do this kind of work.

I live in sink hole and cave country. We have had to have the team come out twice to get the dogs. They did an awesome job and all they would charge was whatever we wanted to donate to the rescue squad. We took care of that.
ITS A WHOLE LOT BETTER TO USE THEM THAN DO IT YOURSELF. THEY HAVE THE APPROPRIATE TOOLS,MOST OF US DONT.

I lost a dog 10 days ago in Carlisle, sc. I made 3 drops with no problems, on the 4th drop, I turned my dog loose and when I looked on the garmin to see which way he went I realized it wasn't tracking him. After recovering the other dogs, I began to call and call for him but nothing. On the garmin, it showed him treed at the last spot we turned loose at, which is across a big river, so I know he wasn't there and when i checked the collar stats it said I had full battery and full communication but no gps signal on the collar.
I went back the very next morning and the garmin handheld read I had one bar of battery on collar and 3 to 5 bars of communication depending on where I was at in relation to where I lost him at, but still no gps signal on the collar. this was a dc-50 collar. I walked the woods and creeks where I lost him only to find nothing.
To have communication with the collar with the handheld means the collar is nearby, right?
What is your thoughts as to what happened?

No caves around here but every year someone has one lost in a tile, often as much as 300' under ground. The only recourse us digging them out. And that is most often gonna involve a farmer and a backhoe.

Yeah, it was still showing treed, but I know he wasn't there because I just turned him loose and plus it was across the river 3 miles away. I don't know what happened to him cause I have never been hunting when he hasn't come back to me at least after some time, that is what is puzzling and makes me think he was either stolen or he fail in hole, but when I was searching thru woods I never came across a cave or hole but that doesn't mean there is not one somewhere.
I figured he was somewhere in the area he was turned loose because the handheld was communicating with collar still and the collar had one bar of battery life left. and then, if he was stolen the handheld should have never had communication with collar since he would have been near by, I guess.

I even tried shocking him to see if he would bark so I would know the direction he was in but didn't hear him and plus the shocker some times don't work well so I don't know if he was in a hole and we couldn't hear him or the shocker didn't work. I have rode all roads within a 5 mile radius of where I lost him and have seen him. again, what is frustrating, he has always come back after awhile hunting, he is a dead loner, it doesn't matter how many dogs he is hunted with, he will never be with another dog and therefore he really has never hunted out that far by himself, maybe between 500-800 yards and he has always came back.
I put a shirt of mine down with food and water where I last turned him loose and everything is still there

A field tile. A lot of the farmers around here put them in their fields to help drain off water. this enhances crop production. When they don't cap the end of the tile where the water drains coons go in to get a easy meal or hide. Then dogs chase scent in the tile and they usually get stuck. Then you have to get The farmer's permission to dg a hole in his field. then you have to find someone with a back hoe to get out of bed at 1 am and dig your dog out.

Ycoonhunter, Can you check with the forestry service to see if they know of any hazards in that area that might trap a dog? Also, you can check with local coon hunting clubs to see of they know of any possible places he could be stuck.
