Really BIG PROBLEM

I have a dog that has decided that he wants to go to houses whenever he gets in trouble or just can't find a track close by. Any suggestions besides electricity, he's already had enough of that to light up a small city. This is a nice dog, straight as a string, belly up hard tree dog but I'd rather he ran deer all night than go camp out on someone's door step.

If he's had enough electricity to light up a small city,,I'd say that's why he's doing what he's doing.

Well you may very well be reaping what you sowed. So many folks want to use the little electrical device for everything under the sun. It is my opinion that this dog has been over corrected with the shocker, thus causing him to go to houses as he does not feel safe in the woods. He feels more safe around a house than he does in the woods where he knows its just a matter of time before the ol electrical stimuli is about to start coming.

Lock that shocker in your gun cabinet and just start hunting him without correction and see if that helps. I can't imagine why a dog would have been introduced to enough electricity to light up a small city when he is straight as a string and a belly up tree dog.

Hope you can turn him around.

electricity ..

it sounds to me that may be your problem , a lot of hard headed dogs that can take more juice if you light them up enough on high will do just like you said your dog is doing , i don't know if they are a cure for it because its man mad and man ended , if he was mine i would hunt him with another dog and leave the e-collar off of him and hope that it will keep him pulled to the woods instead of running off to someones house or getting into a road ..

I didn't use the shock collar on him for anything other than one possum or to get him back across a river a time or two. At any rate, he knows what it is, but he hasn't had an overwhelming exposure to it till he started doing this. I hunt him with the collar on and with it off and have the same results, by himself and with company as well. The e-collar is not my first choice and after nailing him hard with it several times I don't think it will work on him anyway.

I agree! Lay off the shocker, he's going to the houses to get away from being shocked! Just let him hunt.

We had a rabbit dog take off after a deer one time and he never came back to us but went to the truck. Where we had cut them loose. When we found him he had crawled over the muffler to get away from it. We thought we had lost him. Turned out to be a good dog though.

Been there, done that ! No houses, no problem, goes hunting good, tree's real live raccoons. Gets as deep as he has to to get it done and looks great, just not many places like that that close to here.

Pay attention please, he wasn't being shocked enough to cause the problem and shocking him didn't send him to the houses. He was being shocked because he went to the houses, obviously it isn't working so I stopped that approach and am looking for other suggestions.

I think I'm going to go with the box for a while. Leave him in it when I turn the other dogs loose for about 2 weeks, that will be about 6 or 8 trips to the woods. Let him hear the dogs and the rifle and smell the coon in the truck and not get to touch it and see what that does for his attitude.

Turn him loose where you know the people that live in the houses. Get them to come out and whup him and run him off if he comes to their house. Or turn him loose near a house that has a very large, very protective yard dog. He has to learn that houses aren't a nice place to go to.

Did you shock him when he gets to the house, or when he is headed to the house?

when he got there and stayed. but at any rate, I'm going with leaving him in the box for a while and if that doesn't fix the problem I will hunt him around houses where other hunters and amish live who will be more than happy to explain to him that he is not welcome at the house.

Mr. Barnes and Rocketman, I realize that you don't know me, so I just want to let you know that I have been using an e-collar to correct hounds for many years with very good results. When I do use it, I only use it as much as necessary to get the message across that they are doing something wrong and then rewarding the good behavior. My dogs don't run from me (unless I send them off a slick tree with a boot in their butt) and are usually wagging their tails and licking my hands when they see me. Even this one that runs to houses.

Thanks for the response Mr George! I meant no disrespect. I've used shock collars for my german shorthairs hunting pheasants in nebraska, almost always with positive results. I have not had to use one with my bluetick pup so I've been lucky! I know the hard work it takes training a pup. I wish you the best of luck!

I had one years ago that went through that. He kept going to the same house. I stopped hunting him there and he would visit other houses but not stay as long. A few months later the house he liked to visit had hound pups. I think he was looking for the same thing at the other houses. He went to a house one night and took a bad tail whooping from the yard dog. Cured him.

Now dang it he said he has shocked the dog enough to light up a small city... yet he hasn't shocked the dog very much.
