Been A While !!

I use to hunt down in Anderson and Sumter when i still lived in N.C but it has been a few years since i have hunted there i think the last time was 97, any of the lower and mid part is good and flat from what i am use to and you can tree a few coon the only thing is if you hunt early in the year the bugs will eat you a live and if you hunt in Sumter around the lakes you can add to that snakes are bad and the lower you go if it is warmer you will run into a gator or two, you may get lucky and they may have killed out all the bugs, snakes, gators, since i was down there in 97.

10% mountains rough hunting. Thin coon, considered zone 1
20% hills with fields. Good hunting. Zones 2 to 3.
70% swamps further south the more water. Need a hound that's not afraid of swimming deep and treeing in water. Zone 3 down (low country)

Hunting In South Carolina

Since someone else started this I'm going to wade in a ways ( no pun intended).

I have been making plans of sorts to go to SC in between the holidays and hunt in the Marion Francis or is it Francis Marion WMA. I understand it is a national forest and is some swampy. I know I have some permits to buy also... Anything else anyone would be willing to tell me ???

Thanks, B

I have been hunting in the Francis Marion since 1968, and this is the worst I have ever seen it. We got 10 to 12 inches of rain and the woods and the swamps are flooded. Coon hunters are looking
for dry spots to hunt. The coon population is very thin this year also. Plus the roads are damaged due to all the rain.

When my friend was stationed in the air force in charleston I used to go down and hunt the Francis Marion WMA frequently. Piece of advice.........Dont wear waders, wear tennis shoes. water will be over your waders, and atleast with tennis shoes you can take them off easy and not be carrying all that water.

Parts of the WMA maybe better but the sections I was in were chest deep. And if you reach a section off of Hwy 17 labeled as "Iron Swamp", Stay out!

Anybody hunt that section of Sumter national forest around Clark hill lake. I live in game zone 1 and have always wanted to try hunting around there.
