Is it possible to have a dog that has proven they don't chase deer time and again, to only run 800 yard track in almost straight track bawlin do a little circle and come back. Just so happen its durin the rut. Solely just cause it is the rut? More scents, hormones and all.

even though bucks are ruttin and have a stronger scent now if a hound has never run a deer shouldn't run 1 now if it's a young gamey hound could happen jmo

He's 14 months old. But iv had deer I could see within 30 yards of him and he's done his own thing. More than once. In the woods and open corn field.

our deer season starts monday and don't go out till december i won't hunt my young dog till the last day i try not to put a young dog in a bad postion but that's just me

I have seen some absolutely crazy interactions between dogs and deer and it has always involved does instead of bucks.

Here my best advice Kenny.Put that young pup in the pen till after rifle season.To many deer guts and wounded shot up deer to run.That blood will not help any young dog at all and the next thing will be eating every gut pile in the woods.

One possibility, a buck in rut messing with your dog, Had a dog tree on a side of woods with a fence, dog was acting funny treeing, when I rounded corner of woods and walked up a big 10 point buck chasing dog back and forth across fence while he was trying to tree. I have never seen or heard of this happening before and probably would not believe it unless I seen it with my own two eyes. Had a hard time deciding which to shoot buck or coon . Alas shot the coon, it was a nice 10 point

Had a male dog several years ago that was a coon dog and straight other than when bucks were rutting. Then he would bump some tracks a 100 or 200 yards for about two weeks out of the year.

I got a young dog that runs deer a little. They circle a bit then head out. My dog has a completely different bark when he's running a deer. I can tell exactly when he opens on a deer then know the exact moment when he switches over. I really enjoy listening to a red hot deer race. When he runs one it's not if he is gonna switch over, it's just where he's gonna be when he switches over. He's only about 50-60% accurate most of time, but when he pulls those switch over jobs he's near 90%. And always alone. If you got big woods to hunt and dog will switch over there hard to beat. Accurate and almost always alone. Personally I love a dog that does this as long as he likes a coon a bit more than the deer.

O he loves to get him a coon and has only ever treed coon. Seen him jump beded deer and still do his own thing and tree coon. But the other night I cut him and he bawled took the heck off. Bawled and bawled for 800 yds or so In almost straight line. Did a 40 yd circle and came back quiet. Thing is, right where we cut him I jumped a buck and it took off the other direction. I mean complete opposite direction. I figured well he don't run deer so hel be alright. Then he did that the opposite direction where that buck went.

rutting deer, is a bad time to hunt a dog they may run deer,when otherwise would not run them especially a young dog.this is my experience hard enough on older dogs....

If the dog isn't running them far I just consider it extra tracking experience for a young dog. I wouldn't get too worked up over it and correct th dog without being brutal, shoot some coon out to it, and all should be well. If he's only doing it this time of year and only 400 yards then he isn't bad on deer and should be easily broke with today's equipment. Back in th day a deer bumper was almost harder to completely break than a deer runner. You could eventually cut off that deer runner and give him/her some real discipline. The deer bumper was hard to catch in the act.
