Our WI Department of Natural Resources has many opportunities for the public to learn about various kinds of hunting; pheasant, deer, bear, etc. They also are helping us promote coonhunting to the public through our annual Learn To Hunt Raccoons Program. The event will be October 17-18, 2015 at the Mackenzie Center in Poynette, WI.

This Learn to Hunt (LTH) program will introduce novice hunters to raccoon hunting at night using trailing hounds. Participants will learn raccoon biology and furbearer management, firearm safety, basics of hunting with hounds, rules and regulations, and fur handling and pelt preparation. Participants will hunt under the direction of an experienced mentor and dog handler. Program sponsors include: The WI DNR, and the Southwestern Wisconsin Coonhunters Association.

This is a very fun event. I had the opportunity to take a dog and help with the hunt portion last year. It is a very rewarding feeling when the kids totally lose it after they see the coon. I HIGHLY recommend getting involved in a program like this.

Lord willing I will be there again this year. It's pretty rewarding watching a young hunter "roll out" their 1st coon . The kids seem to really enjoy the whole days worth of activities............. Jon

Another Learn to Hunt Program in the books. Great fun had by all, and a few of our students have come out for another hunt. I think they are hooked! At the very least, we hope they come away with a positive perception of what we do. Even if they don't become coonhunters, they could become landowners, voters, and people that understand us

Good job it is something that should be done around the country to keep the sport alive. We can't live forever and need the younger generations to pass along the torch to keep it rolling. Some happy people in those pics adults and children alike.
