looking for a consultant/mentor

I'm 67 Y/O and thinking about purchasing my first coonhound(s). Based on previous experience, I find it difficult to "write the check" based on what someone tells me about the animal they want to sell me. Because I have very limited experience with coonhounds, it would be very difficult for me to accurately assess a dogs skills.

If I were Donald Trump, I would hire a bunch of consultants and tell them what I wanted and they would be responsible for finding a good fit..... and if they did me wrong I would sue them....

If you know a coonhunter in the midwest that might provide unbiased advise, and you would trust them with your check book, I would interested in chatting with them..

Breed is not important... but I do know the difference between a bluetick and a border collie..

Thank you very much, and good luck with your hunting season.

I am not looking to purchase the next world champion... It might be fun to participate in some off season hunts, but mostly I would be pleasure hunting and I'm not interested in walking several miles to collect my dog(s). Thank you.

try BEFORE you buy,,,whatever you do,,go hunting with the dog you are going to purchase,,and if possible,,go afew nights with it,,that way, you know for yourself what the dog is capable of doing,,or not doing,,do not buy off the chain,,their are some honest guys that sell the dog they have described that is true to their word,,but their are a lot of guy out there that will smile all the way to the bank,,I wish you the best of luck,,and I hope you get yourself a good one,,and welcome to the coonhunting world

Hi Gary,

Here is what I suggest you do. Find someone to go pleasure hunting with and buy half their dog. Have them keep it at their house and feed and water it everyday. When you want to hunt, call them and tell them you are coming over for a hunt.

You won't be writing any checks if you plan to buy a dog, it is a cash only type business!!

It gets cold quick in WI, you only have another 60 days or so to hunt, then you will be breaking ice for the next 120 days so your new dog can drink water. LOL

Just having some fun, but there is some truth to what I am saying!!

Good luck!!

.

If I am reading this correctly you are 67 and have limited coon hunting experience and have never purchased a hound. At 67 with no or limited experience I think you should just find some friends around you and ride to the woods them. Then branch out from there. You meet two or three guys around you I am sure one of them has a young dog you could hunt.
There are two major sides to your question.
1. Finding a good dog, which is hard for even the most experienced person.
2. Getting into coonhunting and making sure your going to enjoy it.

Like I said ease into it with some friends and make sure coonhunting is for you and the dog will show up along the way.

Good Luck!

Mr. Dan that is a great idea. Have you held one of these before? I will try and give you a call today and discuss what you do if you don't mind sharing.

Yes, our club has helped sponsor several. There will be two coming up before mid October, the first one is at Yellowstone lake which is close to Monroe and the other is opening night of coon season at Poinette Wi. at the Mcenzie center DNR station.

Gary,

I live on the west side of Madison, but grew up in Cedarville (15 miles south of Monroe) and am down there most weekends to mow, cut wood, hunt or just help look after my folks and their place. I should be heading through Monroe later today on my way down to Cedarville. Some of my hunting is around Orangeville. If you want to hunt sometime, you can call me at 815-275-6233 or email me at gnoeske@aol.com. I'm planning to go tonight for a while.

As for your post, the first thing you should get fixed in your mind is that, unless it's being sold as a pup or a young, unstarted dog, NEVER buy what someone tells you is a finished coondog without trying it. It makes no difference how honest someone is, their standards or opinion of how a dog operates may be completely different from yours, mine or the next person's. If they won't take you hunting with it to try it, don't waste your time, no matter how nice they are or how wonderful they make the dog sound. Go find another one for sale that you CAN try. DON'T EVER BREAK THIS RULE. (Jrkb2012 said it above...but it can't be emphasized enough.)

Another thought...for what it's worth. Your post stated that you were thinking about purchasing your first "coonhound(s)". This is just my thought, but starting out...if you buy...just get one that does what you want and hunt it.

This is just my thought, but starting out...if you buy...just get ONE FINISHED DOG that does what you want and hunt it. It's VERY tempting to out and buy several dogs or to buy a pup or young dog and train it, but to do it, and do it RIGHT, is VERY tough. That's my opinion. I've gone through lots of young dogs and they finish out at varying levels of ability....and most end up being able to go out and tree coon alone just fine, but to find one that REALLY does things the way you like is EXTREMELY rare. Again, that's just my opinion...but I'm a picky bastard. Anyway, while you're learning about it all, you're probably better off getting JUST ONE FINISHED DOG that does what you want. Life will be simpler and more enjoyable.

Some great advice posted here for you Gary. Personally I would take Grant up on his offer. You won't find a nicer guy/houndsman. Good luck!

Wen I first started I did only pleasure hunt. Then one night 2 years ago i noticed one dog box after another goin up the road. Looked into it here a mile up the road was a coon club. I joined. Best thing to do in my opinion startin out is join a local club. Go out as a spectator and hang out and shoot the bull. Even if u don't wanna be out all night then hang out even after the cast go out. Moh and hunt directors always have stories and don't mind the company.

Thank you for your great replies..

You folks are great. I have two clubs in the area and plan to join both. I have hunted with a couple of folks in these clubs in the past.

I appreciate all the good advice, it will save me years of errors.

Thank you,

I think it is awesome that you're wanting to get into coonhunting!!! At our stage in life, a lot of guys are looking for a rocking chair. "Go for it!" You will have fun along the way. A good dog cost more, but you will enjoy it a lot more with a good hound. How far you walk may be up to the coon!!! haha!!! Take care, good luck, and God Bless!!!! Keep us posted of your progress!!!

There are some good suggestions and I want to also suggest to try before you buy. If you find a buddy and he's ok with it, try your potential hound with his dogs. A slick dog seller will try to hide a dogs faults with one of their own. Good luck just be very cautious. Good dogs are very hard to find and they are not cheap. If someone is trying to sell you a finished hound for 200.00 something is wrong.

the plan....

Based on the replies I have received, I think I will proceed as follows:

Get more experience by getting involved with the local clubs. Tagging along and learning more about the traits that each dog possesses (good and maybe not so good). Many suggestions from your posts point in this direction. And, as one or more of you suggested, I might just come across the right dog for me.

Now, if I can make my old carcass keep up in the woods., the hills kill me.

I wish you all well in the upcoming season, I hope you and your dogs have a blast..

Thank you,,,,
