Dog hung by a collar?

I just heard through a friend that her friends dog died treeing last night. the hound hung herself by the collar from a branch whilst treeing.

Apparently they couldnt get to the dog in time and it was too late when they got there. Anyone else ever hear of something like this? Its such a shame to hear these kinds of stories. Stuff like this crosses my mind when my dogs out there with 3 collars on.

Anything you guys do to prevent stuff like this from happening? And also, if the girl that this happened to ( I dont know her name) is here happens to read this, I'm very sorry to hear about the loss.

I've heard of it happening. Make sure those collars aren't too loose. Some accidents can't be helped. Every time we let them loose we take a chance.

So your saying you prefer to keep the collars tight in order to prevent them from being caught on stuff, as opposed to running them loose so that the dog may slip it collar if they were to get hung up?

A loose collar will catch a branch or just about anything else, so ya a little snug is better...

Yeah its happened to my dogs twice. Luckily I was there to help them. First time a young cur I had went of a cliff chasing something and I thought he fell 40 feet to the bottom. When I looked over he was hung on a stick by his collar just close enough to reach him and pull him up. Second time my Leopard was treeing a squirrel in the back yard and jumped up and got hung on a branch I had trimmed out of the fence line. Both were lucky I was there. Sorry to hear about her loss.

Ive had 2 get hung upside down in a small forked tree by their back legs about 8 foot off the ground. Both would of died had I not got there. One was screaming bloody murder. One never said a word but the dog with him treed him. Thu was before GPS. One thing we never know when we un snap em is if our buddy will be going back home with us. Its always bad to lose one to anything but it could of had no collar on period and still have died.

You can best believe that if there is a way for a dog to get hurt or killed a coon dog, probably the best one you have ever known, will find it and do it. I was with a buddy one night when his little female really turn on...she struck a nice track and lined out, by the time the older dogs got to it she was throwing a locate and started to chop 90 BPM...she jumped up one time right when we first got to the tree and came down on a stick that pierced a lung and was dead before we could get her to a vet...30 minutes tops, cold stone dead. My buddy quit hunting and hasn't owned a dog since and that was 1992.

Black Knights Balu Jetta

My name is Dana Baker. That hound that died last night was my girl. Her name was Jetta, and she meant more to me than anything. It was very very tragic and we are extremely saddened to have to mourn the loss of our Bluetick. She was a great coonhound, and will live on in my heart forever.

That's what happened to the mother of Mighty Max owned by Eddie Williams and Tony West. Two weeks after she weaned the pups. I also had a good male back around 1980 that hung like that in a big brush pile.

I was out one night and my cur treed. I got to her and she jumped up on a forked tree. He front paw got stuck in the fork of the tree. She was yanking her paw and I suspect she would have torned it off if I hadn't lifted her up and helper it out.
I'm sorry for the lose of you dog. I know the feeling too well.

So sorry for your loss, Miss Dana. My heart goes out to you.

We do our best to take care of our hounds, but they are focused on following scents and that is what they are passionate about, but that concentration does get them in trouble sometimes. Even on lead, a dog with its nose to the ground will walk into things. Still, a dog is more often better off with a collar with name tags than without.

For those of you that don't know about it, most collars sold by vendors at the events or hound supply places are in two pieces with a "roll ring" opposite the buckle. These rings are supposed to help a dog escape its collar if it gets hung up. Doesn't always work, but it gives the dog a slightly better chance.
A dog doesn't have to be hunting to hang itself. I've seen dogs tied to a parked truck that managed to get hung up on the tailgate somehow, and others that have tried to climb a fence enclosing them that got hung up trying to escape. Usually they make enough noise so someone comes to the rescue, but a suffocating dog can't always make a racket and summon help.

Everyone is sorry you lost your dog. I am sure that just about everyone has lost one and it's never good.
There aint but one thing to do about it.....somewhere, somebody has a ready to go, whimpering, whining, puppy smelling little dude {or dudette} that is just waiting for the right person to come along and take them home.....guess what???? Big giant surprise!!!! YOU are that person now!!!! You might not have been a few short nights ago, but you are now. We just don't always get to choose...this got dropped in your lap for a reason. Go and find him {or her}and make the best of it!!!!!! I am not saying to just drop and forget the one you had...only that you now have to make the best of it.

Still doesn't make losing my Jetta any better. I just can't understand why this had to happen. I'm so sad.

It just dawned on me who you are Dana. I talked with you and Joe at the Jim Hogan Memorial hunt back in July. If I'm not mistaken Joe hunted that dog that night didn't he? That was a very nice dog, I'm so sorry for your loss!

I've seen it happen. It happened to my buddy 13 years ago. This dog got caught in the fork of a tree ABOVE his collar and hung himself. How tight or loose the collar is has nothing to do with it. He was treeing and we were going into the tree and he just quit. We ran as fast as we could but it was too late. My buddy never was the same, he did not hunt much longer. To this day I still try to get him to go but he doesn't. Dana is my friend and Joe is my cousin. There is NO ONE out there that loves their dogs more than these two. I hate what they are going through because I've dealt with it myself. Please don't anyone say what could have been done because there is not always an answer. Sometimes things just happen out of our control and they are going through a rough time. Please just be respectful to my family and friend.

Stuff like this happens. This is when a GPS system is worth its weight in gold. It will get you to the dog in time to possibly save it.

I run mine loose to but I see the logic in what some people are saying about running them snug as well. No matter what you do after something bad happens you wish you had done something different. The bottom line is that wasn't Dana's or Joe's 1st night in the woods. They both know as well as any of us how to handle their dogs.

We have debated OVER AND OVER in our kennel about loose collars or tight collars. I will tell you that Joe out her collars on and she barked and sounded muffled so I made him loosen them. The collar he loosened is the one she hung herself from so I will forever feel guilty about that. Hind sight is 20/20. 😥
