"I Coon hunt" or "I run hounds" -- you do what??

Question: So I live in the greater Houston area now. The Woodlands. And co-workers and new friends ask, "what do you do for fun?" They look at me like I'm a crazy person when I say I Coon hunt or run dogs. Or my dogs are my life. Etc. I know I live in a major city but it's also still Texas and plenty of people deer hunt, waterfowl, and bird hunt around here.

So my question is, is this a normal response you guys get when asked if you hunt or what do you hunt?

I guess it's a dying sport but I hate to see it go.

I get the same response. I always tell people that coon hunting to me is like playing a sport is for most people. I take it serious and I love every aspect of coon hunting. Most people think I'm crazy but I have also talked to a few that get interested in it.

Hahaha try doing that in Cali.

Me: "I run dogs"
Other person: "like you race dogs?"
Me: "no I hunt raccoons with my dogs"
Other person: "like for fun? What do you do with the raccoons?"
Me: "nothing my dogs chase them to the tree and then I load the up a hunt somewhere else"
Other person: "what's the point"
Me: "it's fun to watch the dogs work"

By this point I get a look like what a stupid hillbilly redneck Portugee and a "yeah....sounds like fun in really sarcastic tone lol

Ol Cali for ya

Yes a you should see the look of confusion when you tell them you are a coonhunter the first thing they ask is what do you do with the coons and you tell them nothing just look at them and go home !!

Yes! Seriously all of these situations are exactly what I'm talking about. Glad it's not just my area of the country.

Just like bird watching, except they all look pretty much the same.
