What part of Virginia are you from Ridgerunner??? I just finished my cabin over in Natural Bridge a while back. Haven't really spent much time in the woods yet...always was there just working on getting it done.
I am heading up that way this weekend to get things ready for archery season. Some of the locals say it grows there. I am going to take a good look.
Any tricks to finding it??? I have heard that it doesn't like to grow in areas where there are ferns. I also was told to look for it on the side of the mountain that doesn't get any sun...they say it wont grow in sunlight. Any truth to any of this???? Thanks in advance for any info.

And yes sir most time the north side is better than the south side..look for good green places if it looks dry it prob ain't there it likes the shady places best the deeper and darker the holler the better most times..

Thanks for all the tips...sounds like I just might have a few good spots anyways...I don't have any laurel, I got ferns and I do know what Cohosh is. Don't have a lot of it, but I have definitely seen some. Lots of poplar and wild cherry trees. Not really much pine.
If I find any this weekend I will post some photos. Thanks again.

Same here in PA. That's to give the berries time to ripen and fall off so the seeds get replanted.

Don't you have to get CITES tags to harvest it??? At least in Virginia???? I don't actually plan on digging up any of it, I just want to see if I can even find some.

I wouldn't doubt that being your farther south but up here I'd have to say it was probably a good move. The berries are usually dropping up here just a week or two before you can harvest. You mentioned people being smart enough to not over harvest, that would be true with old timers but with this new popularity of hunting ginseng I just have my doubts if people are experienced enough or sensible enough. There's even a reality show about hunting it now. I think people watch that and go to the woods to see how much they can haul in with no regard for the future.

Yep, you are correct...it's the dealers that have to go thru the Federal stuff to buy, sell or export it. All of my land is in the Jefferson National Forest, but I think I could harvest it if I wanted to since I actually own the land. But yeah, that does seem dumb...we bought that land, it's ours, but we cant use a resource on it!!!

Seems like I remember seeing up there with yellow leaves sometime around October...I think some of it still might have had berries and some didn't...been a while since I lived up your way. Need to get back up there for a visit. Also, wasn't there another plant that looked just like it but had no berries??? Sarsaparilla ???? or something like that???

I wouldn't say you couldn't find a berry here or there but they should have pretty much fallen by that stage. There is a plant with a leaf shaped just like Ginseng with a similar saw toothed edge to it and it even is somewhat pronged like Ginseng but the prongs aren't quite the same and the stem is tough, Ginseng has a real delicate stem to it.
