started super accurate. Now coming up short ?

i have a pup that started super accurate coon in probably his first 17-20 trees i didn't knock any out but praised him up pretty good now he is coming up short. This is real bad when i hunt him with another dog at first he didn't care did his thing treed in front took tails past slicks and had a coon now its like he is trying to be treed first. I ve been whooping him and sending him on and he is continuing to get better but will still pull the trigger short. what have y'all done to correct this ? he is only 7 months old and will knock a hole in the dark and is usually the first dog to strike

Pup....

Sell him to me.......if not I'd slow way down on hunting him for he is only 7 months old and I'd be hunting him all alone right now.

He is ONLY 7 months old,,first thing I wouldn't be doing is whooping him,,I would just be telling him no and send him on,,he is a pup,,let him figure it out on his own,it will come together,,sounds like he's already doing more than what a lot of pups are doing at his age,,he is at the very beginning of the learning stage at that age,,he isn't a 2 or 3 year old at the end of the learning stage

You need to hunt him alone, somehow he's lost his confidence and is leaning on the other dog.

Alot of people are going to disagree with me but i have a do g bred similar and saw the same thing happen do not worry about it he will get over it by hiself and the worst thing i did was hunt him by hiself too much i should have hunted him one to one alone then with company. dont even think about whippin him til fall period.

hunt him alone and 2-3 times a week max IMO. this isn't that uncommon, most start out as accurate as they CAN end up but it is up to you to make sure that happens. He is just getting competitive and trying to rush wish is a good sign. HUNT HIM ALONE

At that age you need to hunt him alone unless you want to turn him into a cover dog.If he's treeing at that age you got a good one.One good fur season should lock him in.

.

I thought all pups started out accurate. Most haven't learned how to trail that well and the tracks they do run are good tracks that they can or should be accurate on. Once they progress and they start handling more difficult tracks the treeing accuracy can change. What you do when this happens greatly effects the outcome of how good or bad your dog will be.

I have seen them do this if they get praised too much on a tree. They want your attention and it feels good to tree and have you come in and praise them up. A tree dog is born and not "praised" into treeing. a quick rub on the head and then lead away from the tree a bit and really praise them up. JMO

I wouldn't even consider whooping a 7 month old dog. Take it slow and let him progress at his own pace... lots of guys ruin a young dog by pushing them

im not whooping him like yall think just grabbing a small green branch with leaves on the end and running him out with that. also I'm not pushing him very hard 1-2 times a week. He wants to go way more than that he lives in the house and will come sit in front of me and whine every night I think he needs to go out but he heads right to the room with all the hunting equipment and will do this for an hour it drives me nuts. another thing is he is not leaning on the other dogs at all he if anything is trying to beat them he doesn't like to cover at all and usually is the split or treed first

also some of the times I think he is messing with squirrels cause he'll make a tree with out running track and if I cut him off those type of trees he usually stays right in the same area and make another with out barking and they are usually little trees. Ive seen him tree squirrels like that when he was younger during the day and have the meat

just keep hunting him and not giving him coon and see what you end up with, if I had a 7 month old pup that was treeing coon I would shoot every coon he treed , every one will say you do not have to give them coon, but if he was mine he would be a top hound before a year old.

Hunt him by his self

Think bout it he's 7 months old he's a baby. He's not develop his muscle tone and energy isn't of a grown dog. He's trying to do things that he's not ready for there fore is coming up short. Hunt him by his self he want have any pressure on him and he will learn the right way by taking his time. Sounds like you have a great young hound send him to me for two months I bet u want have 0 problems with his accuracy or nothing you couldn't live with. But it's a easy fix HUNT HIM BY HIS SELF

You answered your own question in this post right here,,you stated he is trying to beat the other dogs,,that is more than likely why he is coming up short,,he is competing to get first tree,,,HUNT HIM ALONE,,so there isn't any pressure on him and he can do it at his own pace

well hunted him alone tonight and looked pretty good first drop he sunk in about 500 yards hit a track took it out of there and treed with a coon. I noticed on this one he located treed a little then got off and checked his self before climbing back on and treeing. Next drop he started some trash I believe as he ran it over a mile but fell off and treed with another coon on a pecker pole. he was .7 of a mile and stayed and treed every breath

Pups are gonna go through so many differnt stages it will make u crazy. They go through running junk vaze, treeing slick vaze, leaveing trees vaze. i dont know it all i just know what has worked for me and what worked for pete didnt work for judy. i cant tell you really what will work and what wont for your pup but i will tell you this. Your pup is still young. I wouldnt really worry alot about him missing right now. hes running and treeing and thats a big plus. sounds like a big hunting dog and thats a plus. hes haveing problems with dogs and hes to young to work on with dogs so id hunt him alone 85% of the time till he gets close to a year old then id start hunting him with dogs 85% of the time but only with dogs that look to get alone and id make him get alone too. differnt methods to this and if u dont know exactly how to do this then dont do it at all cause the wrong way will hurt more than it helps. but hunting with loners will take the pressure off of him to finish first. good luck with your pup he sounds like the right kind.

What Skip said x 2.
Al this pup needs is confidence,if you would of givin this pup his first few racoon he would already have it, now the pup is confused and has started guessing, with no reward, and butt whoopins,no wonder the pup, and I mean pup is screwed up.
Dogs have to be confident in what they are doing, and by not being confident they run to another dog and either me too, or just follow , neither are a desireable trait.
I have never understood not giving a pup it's first coon it trees,it's like telling a kid they can go get a cookie, and then not letting them eat it, they would get discouraged in a hurry!

little update been hunting this pup right by his self and he is getting better will still miss on occasion but has gotten much better. I've just been sending him on when he is slick and he usually picks it back up and puts the fur on the end. With all the kittens down I've seen a few nice hounds look silly locating treeing for a few seconds and moving on so I've not been overly concerned. Hunted with another dog last night for the first time in a couple of weeks he looked good split with coons and really paid no attention to the other dog we made nine trees and the dogs were never on the same tree split ten feet apart once and complete other direction a couple of times. really liking this pup. This pup had only ever seen two coon come out of a tree and only one that he treed alone. I plan on giving him a couple but I'm not a big believer in you have to feed a young dog coon they have enough tree bred into them that a good pet and praise is enough.

He has trackman on his bottom side, trackman dogs are known for accuracy issues. That doesn't mean he won't improve. Tree dogs will tree more slicks as pups and track dogs wont tree as many as trees. Over time I expect a tree dog to mature and become more accurate, and a better track dog. I expect the track dog to make more trees and become a better tree dog.

I first would probably lay the dog up till the leaves are off. Idk there would be some pros and cons to this.

Either way you can't do much of anything till the leaves are down. Once there down, and I would hunt the dog alone, 4 to 5 nights a week. When the dog misses, walk in say not here... if you need to stand between the dog and the tree with a switch. Saying not here. Over time, the dog will look at you and you will be able to simply say not here and the dog will get down off the tree and continue on.
You can also try bumping him with the ecollar, if he is pulling up on squrrils or something this is very effective.
If the dog is jealous treeing, sometimes a few months of hunting the dog alone with cure it.

Something else, check his ears, make sure there not infected. I have noticed with my jiggs pup, that his ears seem prone to infection.

best of luck

I would start with this then...break him off of squirrels.
