I think all bluetick fanciers should be on the same team, with the main goal being the furtherance, and betterment of the bluetick breed...... with integrity. When you are on a team, it doesn't matter who hits the winning run, as long as your team wins. When the team wins, everyone wins!!!! There is no room for jealously on a team, and you never attack a team member; team members should work together, not against each other. Division without the breed can't hurt us, but when the bluetick breeders and fanciers are divided against bluetick breedeers and fanciers, we are in trouble. You don't have to agree with me, I'm just thinking out loud. Good hunting and God Bless

you are right on.. All to often the opposite happens.. There are certain dogs in a pedigree that cause me to not consider owning certain dog. But bad mouthing them is not the answer. supporting hard hunting and or showing folks is key.

It is intriguing to me how divided the Bluetickers have been for all the years I have been involved in hunting and breeding hounds.

The Walker men may hate each other, but if there is a stud producing winners, they will hold their nose and breed to him in droves even if they can't stand the man who owns him.

I think the answer lies in the fact that for most men hunting Blueticks, winning the nite hunts isn't the thing that drives them most of all.

Your average Blueticker is looking for a hound that does things a certain way, looks a certain way, and sounds a certain way.

That by definition forces us to be far more picky in choosing a stud than the man who just wants a winner, regardless of what he looks like or what kind of mouth he has.

One of the best hounds I owned the past 59 years of coonhunting was a Bluetick, my last Bluetick was from Mr Sebastian kennels. Than it got hard to find those "old" traits I loved in the breed so I got to meet a guy from Amboy MN who had those traits in a different color. I still like a Blue that has the nose, voice and personilty of the hounds that had brains like back in the 50's/60's!!

I would love to hunt one of those from the "GUY" in OK👍👍

It will work when everyone agrees a dog doesn't have to come out of a certain line. Too many try to make their own line. Too much jealously. There is no common direction. Bluetick will be more popular when you can go pick up a pup and not have to hope he will make it. Walkers are popular because a majority will at least make a fair hound. Blueticks are way more of a crap shoot. Too much emphasis is placed on a stud. Everyone wants the next big stud dog. Maybe male dog owners should attempt to pay the owners of the top females. I bet very few if any top female owners have ever been offered money to breed. The breed needs dogs that will work anywhere. This will never change though. You read an add where someone is looking for a stud. You hardly ever see someone talk about a dog they don't have interest in, goes back to their line, or they don't actually own. They never investigate the female. People say they don't have time to check out every female. If you really want to change the breed for the better it may take that. The breed needs dogs that please a majority and not just a small group. You find very few big hunting, fast, and lonely blueticks. I know there are many out there, I just very seldom see one. It may be time to make crosses that make the bluetick pioneers turn over in their graves. Lots of things have changed directions because they didn't suit enough people.

Craig, I agree with you on the concept that we as Bluetick owners can be more responsive within our breed to work towards a better dog. But, by who standards do we go by ? Your idea, my idea and someone like Everet Dalton’s idea of a coonhound and ..what they want in a coonhound may differ in vast ways !!

It seems in the Bluetick world we have far more pleasure hunters than competitive hunters and thus the breeding differences and types of bloodlines and qualities within those lines who appeal to the buyers. I myself like a chop mouth tree dog, and I know some gentleman who will not own a bluetick unless its bawl mouth tree dog ?? How do you know at 8 weeks old  other than the traits the sire and dam thus have themselves and knowledge of the traits from that bloodlines.

It seems to me and I see it from gentleman like Mark V, and many others out there that a competitive type Bluetick is being breed, I only know that to win a hunt you just need to tree coons RIGHT !!! But how they get it done may not fit the needs of the weekend pleasure hunter or the meat hunter who has no desire to walk ¼ miles to trees or spend $$ on major tracking equipment or so many different reasons.

It only seems logical that those chasing the night hunts will continue to produce the type hound who can win, and winning takes some luck also and that segment of our breed is smaller than you think. The segment who desire pleasure hunting Blueticks will continue to breed that type of hound and the reason is because there is a market for them and those who venture into the competitive world will seek the breedings of those who produce the kind of Blue who wins in the hunts, a more driving, harder hunting, independent type Blue.

As far as trying to bring the two Bluetick Assocations together that was voted down by the members of BBOA, and the members of BBCHA that I know have no desire for it either so I don’t know why our president continues to talk about it. This issue is a dead fish as far as most of us think.

The main fact is BBOA and BBCHA probably have close to 70% dual memberships so combining them will not gain any mast numbers in membership, taken the fact that they both operate completely different from each other is another factor that makes it impossible for a combining of the two organizations. Fact, why is it so important yet UKC is not pushing the two redbone ASSN to combine, or the three walker ASSN to combine ???? Fact is both offer different things for its members, both have a great history and both do not need to combine to serve the Bluetick hound or its owner.

That seems to be a very good explanation .I believe that the breed can serve both the Pleasure Hunter and the Competition Hunter,just as different car manufacturers produce different models for different drivers.We can ride in a convertible w/ the top & windows down & our hair blowin or we can ride w/ the top down & windows up ,bein a lil tacky or in a hard top .Whatever we choose ,should be our choice and we should be able to have a freedom of choice.I thank God for his creations and do think there isn't anything cuter in the hound world than a bluetick pup! jmo......Dave

Hey Dave, what about us guys without any hair I agree with Mark also, very well said Mark! Lets just hunt what ever type blue dog we like and enjoy our sport and our Blueticks. I'm a sucker for those little blue pups too! Good luck to all in which ever type you hunt.

Last time I hunted in a hunt I was trying to beat everyone and they were trying to beat me. This is not a team sport. THIS IS NOT A TEAM SPORT...Never has been never will. A few may get together on breeding but as for as all bluetickers trying to do the same would not work.

I was not talking about compromising the type of dog you like to hunt. I was not even talking about the night hunts. I think the hunts, as a whole, have been good for coon hunting in general. I think that winning in the hunts have been over emphasized. Winning a hunt by calling your me too dog on another persons dog does not mean your dog is the best. Having an ill dog doesn't mean your dog is the best. When buddies get together, and vote they saw a coon (when they didn't), voting they didn't see a coon (when it's right in front of them), or didn't see a dog fighting (when it was), or buddies won't help you look for your coon if your dog is leading a cast, or on a tree alone, doesn't determine the best dog or the best reproducer!! I wouldn't want a ch. or a win if my dog didn't earn and deserve it. Enough about that. I believe we can be a team, providing we can find common ground. It's for sure, we'll never find common ground on the basis of size, color, mouth. and bloodlines. Everyone has their preferences in looks, strains, mouth, color...ect. That's fine!!! It's always been that way, and always will be that way. Where is common ground? What is our common ground? How about putting the breed on top? How about promoting unity among bluetick fanciers instead of setting the stage for division. We may never get it just right, but that doesn't justify doing it wrong. I think certain scenarios welcome division, and set the stage for division I am not sure of the ingredients for success, but I do know the ingredients for failure.....division. We may never get it perfect, but I believe we can make it better........far better!!!

In order for the blue tick fanciers, breeders, and hunters to function as a team, there must be a cause or common ground. Common ground is so important. If you, me, or anyone else allows personal agendas to become the driving force, or motivation, it won't happen, and can't happen. When we stop thinking about ourselves, and focus on the breed, and making the breed better; making us better, it could work. Everything changes when we realize anyone that is promoting the betterment of the breed, with integrity, is not our enemy.

Craig, I guess I'm a little confused at what your trying to say here ?? As Wesley put is hunting in the competitive world of coonhunting is a solo act other than it is you and your dog.

I understand we as a group of followers can work together in small groups or large groups to try and breed a better Bluetick but again it would be in the eyes of those who are doing the breeding and those who wish to hunt those crosses.

Coming together as a whole ?? Division ?? I completely agree on trying to put Blue at the top but unlike most sports where it is a team working together as a small unit we have several hundred Bluetick followers and if we were lucky to get 50% to like the same traits wow would we be on fire !!!!!

Again, I guess I might be missing the point of what your seeing as division and this being a individual sport ones personal likes will always play a part in what one hunts, follows, buys or breeds.

I hope I'm making sense here I'm just a simple guy lol and just speak my mind and hope it makes sense

Mark, sorry I didn't make myself clear. I'm not talking about competition hunting. I understand when you are hunting competitively, it's you and your dog, against the other handlers and their dogs. That is true in connection to a hunt where someone wins, and someone loses. However, within the breed, as breeders, hunters, fanciers, and even the organizations, it should not be us against the others within the breed, as it is in a competitive scenario. I'm talking about, as fanciers of the bluetick hound, when blue wins, we all win, and there are no losers. The English word, fellowship, comes from a word which means, "To share common ground, or to be yoked together" Fellowship is more than shaking hands, sitting at the table together, or just spending time together. There must be a common cause, or common ground, or a common yoke. What I am trying to say is, if the breed reaches it's full potential and receives the recognition it deserves, we must lay aside personal agendas, personal gain and attention, and put the breed first. That is our common ground, or the "Basis" for a "Team." I think there are steps which could be taken to bring everyone that loves the Bluetick Hound, closer together. We may compete against each other on a hunt, but united in cause and purpose. If every blue dog fancier, came together, not on the basis of liking or disliking a person, but on the basis of loving the blue hound.....and if every blue dog fancier could promote one breed association, and give it 100 %, with everyone pulling in the same direction, I think we would see a huge difference in the expansion and accomplishments of the blue hound, as a breed. If we looked at every bluetick promoter, whether it be for pleasure or competitively, breeding, hunting or showing, as a FRIEND, not foe, regardless of their preferences in a hound, it would make a huge difference. I know what I am thinking, and want to say. Sometimes it's difficult to verbalize my thoughts and feelings.

Personally I believe that we can do better at appreciating what each has to offer. The good thing is there are some with similar likes and mind sets working together to produce the kinds of hounds that suit their needs. The results are showing up. There are so many factors including some luck that help each of us accomplish our goals. I have certainly enjoyed my experience with blues mostly. We are fortunate to have made many friendships around the hounds and that will last a lifetime.

A thought which may appeal to the noble motive, but lacking in practicality.

Do we as bluetickers not already have a common theme that makes us a team? We all hunt blue dogs don't we? I believe that is about as close as you are going to get to the team/coming together thought. Human interpretation, personal preference, and individual goals always have and always will determine the separation from that point. I am in full agreement with like-minded individuals working together to try and produce a hound that suits their likes. Because of the diversity and the individuality the good Lord has blessed us with, the groups of like-minded people will always be of a limited size.

I am in full agreement with like-minded individuals working together to try and produce a hound that suits their likes. Because of the diversity and the individuality the good Lord has blessed us with, the groups of like-minded people will always be of a limited size.
