I have a 10 month old bnt male. He has treed several coons by himself but all been hot tracks. He didn't trail them far and treed them. The major problem on my hands is he is treeing tapped trees like crazy and he isn't finishing the track. I took my old dog with him to confirm he is pulling up short and she ran 2 coons a long way. One 2 miles and 1 3 miles. My old dog hunts close and circles so her running them that far worries me about training a pup bc there is no way a pup would've finished them tracks. I need help on what steps I can take to help him out. Another thing is he will not hunt deep. So that hurts me too

I've had good luck with putting out feeder buckets. Seems to help build confidence faster since your turning them out on a hot track. Like anything, to much of a good thing can be bad. And also every critter in the woods has left a track from that bucket. You can also turn them out away from the bucket and see if they run the track backwards. I'd say if your hound is going 3 miles to tree one, a bucket or two would help out some. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

You say your old dog hunts close but is going 2 and 3 miles to tree a coon ? I doubt she is starting on coon tracks. She may end up treed on one but running one that far would be rare especially this time of year.
You can correct one for slick treeing but I've never seen one personally that went from treeing fool to good accurate dog . You might get him straightened out some but I doubt he'll be real accurate.

The bad thing is the 3 mile race was on a feeder bucket but it has been empty for a few days. The old dog only runs coons but it could've put kittens up and continued running. The young dog has been on feeder buckets some and trees some coons that way but he won't run a cold track and if he does he will tree like 5 times where as my old dog will be running the same track but she will pass him up and finish

Not only was the 3 mile race on 1 feeder bucket but she ran the track right passed a second feeder bucket. But it sucks because there is no way my pup will do any good if my good dog is running them that far

Hunt the the young dog alone if he is slick lead him away push him on to see if he will go finish out the track , after awhile that don't work take and switch him on slick trees , what time of night are you running ?? Coon may be moving early and dog has a cold nose ?? I've had nights ware I dropped the dog later at night and had some longer runs like 1.4 1.8 mile never usually any 3 mile coon races lol

I don't hunt in Illinois. These coons around here are hard to tree. 3 mile race isn't unusual for around here. But with my old dog it is unusual to run that far. She does not run trash. I would hunt her against any dog and tree for tree she will hang with any dog guaranteed. I have been hunting him solo but I believe it's just gonna take time a patience and some correction of course.lol

Keep in mind he is only 10 months keep hunting him alone and get away from feeder buckets in my own opinion they don't make a dog id rather see them go find there own coon some where's I hunt a lot of mountain hilly terrain and my very thick coon so makes a dog earn his coon, what's the breeding on the dog?

Morgan county. He is directly out of ugly stick. He has picked up on things quick and handles like a dream. He listens good and has treed a few coons on his own but didn't have to track any of them far. Which couldve made him think that he don't have to trail them far before treeing

10 months may be a little young for a three mile race. No corn buckets don't always mean short races. If you push that pup too hard too young you'll set him back. Not hunting hard maybe because he's relying on the older hound. Not hunting hard could be because of the three mile races on young mussle and bone. It sometimes means a slow night but hunt him by himself on buckets,just a coonhunt without a bucket, then with the older hound. If he kicks up dirt going to the older hound when it stricks then surly you need some time hunting by himself. On the tap trees don't spend alot of time around a small blank tree,don't reward him for treeing every tree,if you see that it's m/t then lead him away or it's best for a hunting buddy to lead him away and you stay at that BLANK tree don't let him around it chase him away if you have to but let him know your not happy with him.

No. If he trees close to the bucket he usually has the coon. He usually strikes around the buckets and run it for a little ways and then he will start doing it. The hard part now is finding the coon with leaves on. He trailed something over 1000 yards last night and never treed. I thought maybe a deer cause he trailed straight down a four wheeler Rd the whole way but I let him out on a deer and he barked but didn't run it

This is rough so many things could be going on and makes it more of a guessing game. Something to keep in mind the sows have kits now and don't have much sent. They will tap a ton of trees before they go back to the kits. The kits don't hardly any sent either and will play on trees all over. A lot of times young dogs will work a track and loose it and jump another track.

Alright. I'm just gonna hunt him hard on his own and see what happens. I've trained him thus far pretty easily so I think he will come around. He is a really smart dog that learns quickly so we will see
