Composite Decks

I would also like to know. I am especially wanting information on how well they do in extreme & prolonged cold weather.

I had "weather-proof" vinyl-clad windows that were supposed to be "guaranteed", but they cracked & pieces split & broke off after only 3 years, and I was very disappointed in them.

Our winters can be pretty nasty up here.

I don't think composite decking is worth what it cost. Trex is the only one we use now. We've had problems with everything else. The trex had problems when it first came out, they took it off the market, improved it, and now it last good. It gets hot when the sun shines on it in the summer. Put it along one side of my sisters pool about 10 years ago, it still looks very good, but gets so hot the kids have to wear flip flops or something. We use Cox classic duropine treated lumber mostly. If you use treated, be sure to turn it right. The grain should be shedding water. The newer treated does not last as long as the old stuff did.

I've used a few different composite brands and they all seem to be same to me. I like Fiberon the best, they seem to have a little more options in styles and colors. The initial cost is high, but worth it in the long run.

I have the Fiberon on my house and hunting cabin. On the house I used those little stainless clips and screws so you don't have any fasteners on top and it's a great system. Those stupid little clips and screws are rather on the pricey side though. I just flush screwed it on my hunting cabin. It holds up very well in the weather and sun. There are a few things construction wise that I have learned over the years with 15 rental houses, a hunting cabin and my house....vinyl is final, standing seam metal roof means never having to repair or replace a shingle and composite decking is the only way to go. Less than zero chance I would even consider building a deck and not covering it with composite.

I have many decks...I always put one on all my rental houses. The oldest composite deck I have has been there 10 years and still looks like the day I built it. I do have three that were done with the so called five quarter treated wood planks. At four years old they look like I will maybe get another year or two then they will be Fiberon.
One thing I forgot to mention...I think they recommend that you space your joists on 12 inch centers for the composite, but I did 16 and it works fine. Might not work so good if I weighed in at 300 plus, probably feel the boards move. If you are running your planks on a 45 like to parkay the floor I think you might want to go with the 12 inch centers.
The only drawback to the composite is that it will scratch if you slide something heavy on it. People complain about the price but at the end of the day look at me...I have three wooden planked decks right now that really need replaced after only 4 years. The sun is brutal here in the summer.

I am also getting ready to resurface a large deck and i have been referred to TimberTech for Composite Decking. I done some research online and located a website www.advantagelumber.com that offers exotic hardwood decking that naturally resists rot, decay and insect attack. And they say it lasts longer than composites, cedar, & redwood decking. I am choosing Cumaru Decking for my project which i am saving 25% compared to composites and love the low maintenance with 50+ years life span. I am having 16' boards shipped common carrier from there plant in Buffalo to my front door in central Ohio for $100.00.

wow, that sounds awesome!! when is it due to arrive at your home?? i am curious of the quality that "they" pick to ship to you??? so if i understand what you are saying, it requires "zero" sealers or top coats to last 50 years, is that correct???

If you're that worried about it why not just plank her with Atac boards???? Always remember...vinyl is final.

I would have to seriously see wood {I don't care what magic species it is} last 50 years whether or not it has some sort of coating. Then I would have to seriously see the actual written price quote. Coatings don't last forever either. I am not saying it don't exist but deck planking is neither new nor is it rocket science....if it sounds to good to be true it usually is.

Honestly it doesn't matter what brand you use. Only reason u said fiberon is because of it seems to have more color and handrail options. I used many different brands and they all seem to hold up the same. We have trex on our boat dock at KY lakethat has been on there since '96, pressure wash it every spring and it looks new.

I built new house in 04 and used trex out front and in back and it looks like it did when I put it in. An added bonus is when it's slippery from rain, snow, slush it doesn't get slippery like dimension lumber does. You have to put your supports under it closer than dimension lumber, but it will last longer than you do. This was the clincher for me...................no maintainence!

i hear the "no maintenance"!!!!!!!!! i am leaning toward "moisturesheild" composite deck. it is sold locally and from what i understand has a great track record. going to continue to research, but that is where i am right now.

thanks again for all the comments and please keep them coming!!! I have to hash things a lot before i spend the money it will cost to put this on my deck!!!

i did some reading on this, this wood still needs sealers and maintenance work done, more than i want to do....
