glass eye

I bred my male-grandson of stylish clover to my female - grand daughter of stylish clover. ..I was ask by someone if any had a glass eye but at the time their eye's weren't open and then sure enough a female pup has the brightest blue eye I've ever seen...just wondering where this comes from ?

It came from Stylish Queen who got it from Brinkley's Ozark Preacher . Preacher most likely got it from some foxhound blood that he is thought to go back to.

It comes from the gene that controls the skin pigmentation. Normally its dogs with a lot of white on them no matter the breed. Its really prevalent if the white is close to the eye. You see it in a lot in dogs that 1/2 their face is white or the white comes really close to the eye. Does the gyp have white around the blue eye?

I would say Michael is right, statistically speaking, as that's what I've seen as well. BUT, I did have a blanket back (almost all black) female pup this spring, with one blue eye.

Heavy Clover to a Red Eagle X Lipper cross...

It got really bright, as she got older!

Ya but see how she has a wide blaze that almost touches her eye? Thats what causes it.

I'll be danged... so it's specifically the white on the face?

I thought it odd, because this stud has thrown several predominantly white pups and this is the first with a blue eye. But it was on a blanket back pup.

His half brother has one blue eye, and throws a lot of them...

The gene has to be there before it will show up. I've had a couple pups with an almost completely white face and never had a blue eyed pup.

The glass or blue eye trait is seen in English and Walkers and is fairly common in Blueticks and is very common in Leopards. Several foxhound breeds such as Julys, Triggs , and especially Goodmans carry this trait. All breeds with the merle or harlequin color also carry the blue eye gene. My experience with this trait would be that it does seem to show up a lot more in dogs with white or half white faces especially if they have normal coloring on the rest of their body. Like every thing else though about the time you think you have it all figured out an exception comes along in this case it would be the black Lab I once saw with a glass eye.

I have white faced pups all the time without blue eyes, not in the line. But the lines that carry it, the whiter pups tend to have it more often.

There are two ways to get a blue eye.

The blue eye gene is recessive, and it takes two copies to express a blue eye.

There also is the "merle" gene, or as sometimes called the lethal white gene. Having the merle gene causes blue eyes as well.

There are a few lines of walkers that carry the merle gene...but not many. The clover dogs have a recessive gene for blue eyes. I've had a lot of blue eyed pups and dogs...still have three dogs now that have a blue eye.....Not all of them are wide blazed, and I have a female that has a split face, half white and half colored....her blue eye is on the same side as her father's blue eye, but that side of her face has the color.... I raised a solid black headed pup, no blaze at all...and that dog had two blue eyes......

so is blue eyes a trait that one wants , or doesn't want?

I know in humans, or as far as i have read.... means that one has more light sensitivity?
I have blue eyes , and i know that l am real sensitive to sunlight! while dark eyed humans tend to be less sensitive or so im told ..

So whats all that mean in hounds?

would the blue eyes in a hound make them see better at night ? help them to use there eyes as well as there nose when traking?
