Picking a Black Headed Walker Puppy?

For those of you that breed black headed walkers, at what age do you think you can definitely tell the pups will be black headed? I've had some stay mighty dark, then change to a "in between" head color, black on the top of head and ears and red around the face... Which I don't care for. I have a litter of 5 just born, one is obviously going to be red headed already. The other 4 are dark. But is there some trick or age that you can go by to know for sure. I would like to keep another black headed pup off my male without waiting 6 months to see if they change color. I bred him to his daughter, and she is a "betweener" but I figured odds are I will get a black head in the bunch.

It's my understanding that if they have a peanut above they're eye the head is going to stay black.

Inside bottom of the ear will tell you what color head they will have by age 5 weeks.

My female pup had a really dark head and ears up until she was about two months old. She had the peanuts at her eyebrows like a previous poster said. Her head stayed black but the ears and from the "peanuts" down below her eyes all turned brown.

Many walker pups have the peanuts or punkin seeds as they are called when they are first born and about 90% of them end up red headed. If he still has a black head with the two dots over his eyes by the time he is 6 or 7 months old he will probably stay that way.

I believe Mr.Osborne might be right about the inside bottom of the ears.

Thats the place i keep watching for a tell tell sign maybe not a 100% accurate in all pups but a darn good indicator.

I do like the looks of a black headed walker over a red or brown head but the truth of the matter is I just take em as they come. My best dog has a mostly chestnut brown head with a little strip of black over the top and my little jip pup has a head that's orangish brown from the tip of her nose to the top of her neck (kinda ugly really) but if she trees coon good i'll sure still love her more than a black head that can't. LOL
