Recasting

I have been having some trouble getting my female to recast the way I would like her to. She is a very quick dog out of the box, but when I recast her off the tree, she wants to hang around. She will get going eventually but I have to push her, which I obviously can't do in a hunt She is 2.5 years old. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I use a switch. I mean a real small switch preferably with leafs on it to make noise. Right across her tail just as you cut her loose. The other thing is make sure she is pulling slightly wanting to go. Don't cut her if she is not paying attention. Make sure she is alert and pointed the way you want her to go. If a light switching makes her timid don't use this method. Find out what works for her.

I will give you the opportunity to answer your own question.
Do you think she would hang around if a stranger took her hunting?

She isn't hanging around like to hang out, she will go like 50 to a 100 yards and start grubbing, instead of hunting on a run.
I guess I didn't explain my self well. She acts like she is still trying to tree that coon. Last time I knocked one out to her, I had to switch her a few times for going back to trees. However I probably have only knocked a dozen out to her total.

This is pretty much what I'm doing I haven't payed to much attention to how she is acting on the lead though. I will def keep that in mind in the future. Thanks!

Are you hunting this dog by herself??? Is it when she is alone that she does this??? Maybe try holding her on the leash and recasting other dogs that will go. Let her go just when they are out of sight and see if she moves out to get to where the action is. One other thing to try would be to walk her on the leash further away and try getting her to a better spot where there might be another coon to run red hot {if that is possible} You aren't competition hunting her right, so you can walk her further away and hit a better fresher spot. Once she gets the idea that getting released means to find another coon you can cut the distance down. There is probably not going to be another good track right close to where you just treed one anyways. Not saying either of these things will work for this dog, and she might not be too quick to change if at all, but anything is worth a try. Best of luck.

Edit: The switching thing does better for when a dog blast off like he's really going to go out and do something and then circles around and ends up right back under your feet. I haven't had much luck swatting dogs that just wont go out and hunt. Also, I find that young dogs go back to trees because they are let loose too close to the tree, walking them further away helps this until they get the routine of going out and finding another coon. Once they have done this for a while and get used to it you can pretty much cut them loose right beside the tree. Having a good coon population helps this also.

Kinda have to see what she's doing to make an educated guess, but it almost sounds like she's expecting you to walk her, and it sound like you're inadvertently exacerbating the issue by doing so.
Send her and pop her a little with a switch like was mentioned above, but I'd stand still and make her go without walking myself, so she doesn't expect you to walk along before she's supposed to go hunting. I make a point to collar up, say something specific like "Hurry!" every time I cut one, and make sure the snap makes an audible click. I know that sounds silly, but repetition of audible cues seem to do alot for me. Those things get to be like a "ready, set, go!" and most dogs will get where they really fire off the chain.

She is a good hunter, she just doesn't seem to want to give up on the one she just ran.

Minsc, you may have hit the nail on the head. I have only been walking her 30 seconds, because those are the chkc rules.
I may be expecting to much to soon, and need to walk her further before cutting her, until she has the routine down better then start cutting her close.

Thanks for the input guys!!

you just answered your own ??? she is looking for the track of the coon she just treed, I love people that do not think a dog should have a coon. heck go to work and when your boss goes to pay you tell him to pet you and tell you GOOD BOY then tell him I do not need the money.

I gradually work up to recasting them close to where they were treed.
I walk the dog out 50 yrds and I let them calm down, it lets them get their mind off the tree you pulled them off of. then I take a few steps and cut it loose. after awhile you can walk 25 yrds or so, let her calm down and then cast her. eventually with most you can take a few steps off the tree and just cut em. usually works even with the brain lock tree dogs. after enough times with you gradually leaving out the calming down part.
won't happen over night,.,,

My most frustrating obstacle to overcome. Let me know how it works out for you. I will usually walk off the tree for a bit, pull on the snap and kind of perch down like Im getting ready to to cut him. Pull a lil tighter on the lead until I see his ears perk up then cut him loose. He seems to be coming out of it better. Im not expert....but I listen to any advice TC gives

If the dog views coonhunting the same way I view work we have a problem. How many times have you gotten paid for coonhunting. If the dog is wired to hunt he doesn't need a reward. My brother will play basketball every single day. He evens pays to do it. Because he loves it. Not because it's work.

Couldn't agree more, her reward is I take her another night, and don't leave her at home.

The message you want to send is that once you take them off a tree they are done with that coon.
I start by walking them 50 yards or so and cut the dog away from the tree, i do this with the garmin in my hand and if they look like they are gonna circle back i give them a tingle just before they get to the tree, this reinforces that we are done with that tree. When you get one where you can cut them from under the tree while you are skinnin the coon and they head out to get another one its mission accomplished.
Dogs that are hunted by guys that often tree one and head home or dogs that have been trained to heel back to the truck without a lead often develop a habit like you describe.

I do mine a little different than some I see. I take three steps and send. That way I'm between them and the tree. I don't care which way they go to start with as long as they don't come back to that tree. They will eventually start going the way I send them. When that happens I hunt them with another dog and when they tree I leave one treeing pull the other off three steps and send it. Same thing applies it cannot come back to that tree. Repetition is the key. On a side note I heel all my dogs out

I have gotten paid a lot for coon hunting , a dog trees coon because that is what it was bred to do but they like to get paid and a pat on the head only goes so far.

You can take it for what its worth but first you have to teach her what dead means. When you pull her off the tree get her attention. Jerk her up and say dead. I'd start off leading her the whole minute just like in a cast. Take a switch like the other guy says if she can take it and kind of scare her with it. I triple snap my lead when I cut mine so they learn to dart at the sound of the snap!!! When she takes off I'd take off right behind her switching and makeing a ruckus let her get 40-50 yds and bump her with the ecollor. The ecollor only works if somebody hasn't shocked her in. Which is the dumbest thing anybody could ever do. Good luck and repeat repeat repeat repeat. Stay consistent. Don't do what john said tonight and do what I said tomorrow night. This is were people mess up.
