My Coon Hunt w/ NTCH Oak Mountain Frito in the Turtle Mtn Wilderness

...i hunted with Rick Ennen and frito this past weekend in the turtle mtns. the turtle mtns . are a range of hills up on the canadian border,in NORTH DAKOTA. what a beautiful area. but now if you are a coon hunter it is not for the faint of heart..it is miles of hardwood hills lined with lakes ,swamps and beaver ponds .very thick hazelnutt undergrowth , that you might have to tear through all the way to the treed dogs. very unforgiving country.
...seems to be plenty of coons for a dog that will go hunting and one that has the gutts to run one in there. now to tree one that is a differant story. for the dog to be able to tree one in there he has to force the coon to climb in that mess . and that is were a hard nosed coondog comes in real handy. becuse walking and grubbing, and crawling for 3/4 of a mile or more to a slick tree aint going to work.
... coons don't den in trees up there cause there are no den trees. they den in the ground .
.. we had a real good hunt and ol frito looked like a machine programed to tree coons in those conditions . he was very impressive. he ran some running tracks , he ran cold tracks that he got up and forced to climb. every time we cut him he dropped in there ,got struck, worked, or run his track to a heated race and forced ricky racoon to climb. according to the garmin there was not a track he worked under 3/4 of a mile, and that was one track.. the others he moved a mile or more...Rick doesn't shoot any coons to frito and those buggers have been run before.
.. i would have to say in over 24 years of coon hunting that was as fine a work as i have seen. he hunts on the run. he has one thing on his mind, he sounds like a million dollers ,runs with a big hollering bawl mouth that he will shorten up on a hot track , he locates sure, with a die dead quivering locate then turns it over to a very hard never ending loud chop on the tree and we never looked up once that we didn't find his coon , and he never teed in the ground . he finished every track bellied up on the wood with ricky raccoon looking down... the only thing i found about this dog that i would like to change is ownership. he would look real good at my place. very special hound . once in a life time dog.
....BOTTOM LINE THIS SON OF A GUN IS A COONDOG THE HARD NOSED KIND!!!!!!!!!!!

Frito

From what you and Rick say about him on here he sounds like a dandy. I know Rick has posted some pictures on here and he is a fine looking bugger as well. One of my all time favorite coon hound photos is Frito treeing in water up to his neck.

To me this picture shows a dog with heart and desire getting the job done come hell or high water....... for sure high water.

.. like i said before the only thing wrong with him is i don't own him.....

Kyle, that's one of my favorites too. The pic was taken August 24, 2008. Frito was 16 months, 9 days old and all alone deep in the swamps of Wakopa game management area. He pushed a big coon up one of those dead saplings and I was just glad to get out of there before the coon fell out and we all drowned.

Below is another of my favorite pics taken July 19, 2008 in the Lee Lake state forest. All alone with the grease.

Jay, Frito's laid up for awhile after a pack of yotes tried to kill him. They caught him while he was alone working a coon track in a sunflower field and cut him up bad. I didn't think it would happen but it finally did. He runs into yotes most nights and they just harass him. I wonder what was different about that pack?

That sucker sure looks like he's all coondog. Neat story, we have similar hunting in places here in Colorado. Good job and keep the pics of Frito comin. Really impressive.

You know, now I'm nervous cause we get yotes harrassing our hounds at night in areas too. I know they come dang close but we've never had any bother a hound. Was Frito hunting alone when it happened?

I wish Frito a speedy recovery. Sorry to hear about that.

Brady, he was alone at the time and wearing a Tracker flashing light. The yotes made a slashing bite running diagonally across Frito's chest. It starts with two fang puncture marks high on the front of his right leg, then extends in a continuous slash clear across his chest, ending in a 2-3 inch open laceration high up and around the side of his left shoulder. He was a long way off the road when it happened, and after I chased the coyotes away, Frito finished the same track and treed the coon that the yotes tried to kill him on while working it a few minutes earlier. The dog didn't even let me touch him; he blasted off all alone after the coon as soon as the coyotes split.

Wow Rick, glad to hear it's not worse. I do wonder what made those Yotes do something like that. All ours wear Tracker flashlights too... And for that dog to still finish the same track?! Sheesh, he's got some drive!

Jay, that's exactly what my wife said. Get him a hog vest.

The odd thing about this pack of yotes is they came in mostly silent. Usually you'll hear them barking all the way as they come into the dog. The pack that attacked him barked maybe twice, then they came in silent and I did not know anything was going to happen.

When yotes come in on him he always sits in one spot and doesn't bark at them. The way I can tell he's cornered is I hear the yotes and see him stationary with the Garmin.

This time I figured it out only with the Garmin because this time there were no barking yotes; they just attacked and I couldn't hear anything out there.

Jay, any chance you can make a trip this late November? The wilderness woods are great to hunt after the aspen lakes freeze over and the crisp air really amplifies the sound of the dogs. You'll need a dog with long legs and brains for tough conditions. I know you've got some dogs like that.

after looking at these pictures again i realized a dog like that is not for the faint of heart. that dog would tree many a coon in places i don't have the heart to go. a dog like that should be hunted with the hard, hardest core hunters there is. that's what he deserves.
